Z -- Zorro film (D: Jonas Cuarón)
Jonas Cuarón, the award-winning writer of “Gravity,” is set to write and direct a new Zorro movie titled “Z” for producers Lantica Media and Sobini Films, the companies announced Thursday.
Details of the project are being kept under wraps, though it will present a fresh take on the legendary Latin hero, knows for his black mask and sword-signature.
Veteran producer Amin, whose credits include the upcoming Sony Classics release “Miles Ahead,” will produce the film, while Albert Martinez Martin will oversee production for Lantica. Cami Winikoff and David W. Higgins are set to executive produce on behalf of Sobini.
Lantica Media will finance the film, which is slated to start production this summer at the Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios. Pantelion Films will handle international sales.
Cuarón recently wrote and directed the Gael Garcia Bernal-Jeffrey Dean Morgan thriller “Desierto,” which won the International Critics Award at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, and is slated for release this spring by STX.
“When I saw ‘Desierto,’ I was impressed with Jonás’ command of action and suspense, his great
visual eye, and the strong performances he elicited from his actors,” said Sobini Films CEO Mark Amin.
“We are very fortunate to have Jonás on this film,” added Lantica Media CEO Antonio Gennari. “His love of cinema is evident in his work and he is very talented in his ability to tell a compelling story. We look forward to seeing where his vision will take us.”
Cuarón is represented by UTA.

Only interested if they cast a white guy as Zorro. Or maybe a half-Asian.

EXCLUSIVE: Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) and Jonás Cuarón (Desierto) are coming together yet again — this time for the reboot of Zorro in a film entitled Z. Cuarón’s Desierto, which stars Bernal, will be released by STX later in the year. The new pairing on Zorro is being brought to Cannes after Cuarón introduced the project at Berlin earlier this year. It is written and will be directed by Cuarón and is eyeing a fall start at the Pinewood Dominican Republic studios.

Was alway funny to me that Hopkins was old spanish Zorro and Banderas was a mexican Zorro. Which honestly kind of falls in line w/ the older stuff and such but still... hahaha.
Now.. we have a Mexican playing Zorro.
I'm game just cuz I love Bernal but it'll be hard to top the Mask of Zorro cuz that one was crazy fun and pretty good.
I've always loved the character based on what he was but never cared for the older material. Never read those comics they've made in my time.

I've never seen the original 1920s Zorro starring Douglas Fairbanks, but I thought the Mark of Zorro starring Tyrone Power, and later, the Banderas and Hopkins' Mask of Zorro were great. I'm still surprised that Mask of Zorro didn't make that much money. I felt like they really did right by the source material, and I loved the little call backs to original films.
Gravity was also a great film so Z should be good.

Banderas is the only non-Mexican Latino dude that I give the pass to. Mask of Zorro is still excellent almost 20 years later. I refuse to watch Legend of Zorro, because I hear they fucked it all up.
