The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2016
What's a Comic Book Challenge?
- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations
How does it work?
- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter
What makes it a "challenge"?
- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)
Who can participate?
- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not
When does it start and end?
- it begins at dusk on January 31st, and ends at dawn on March 1st
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges
How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages
Who wins?
- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day
What is the schedule?
January - TV/Movie/Book
February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)
- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion

Any comic nominated for a major award qualifies.
I was going to call it Awards or something generic but decided to honor the great Will Eisner.
Challenge begins at dusk on January 31st and ends at dawn on March 1st.
Wikipedia list of international awards, thanks Joe!

And a wildcard that anything done by Eisner counts.

I started reading Ghost World last night as part of the movie/tv challenge, but I supposed it could also count for this. In addition to any comic awards it was nominated for, the movie's screenplay got an Oscar nomination.
I've got a lot of Dan Clowews to read, also Astro City, Sandman Overture and stuff from various Humble Bundles.

February 1-3
Y the Last Man 1-6 - so far aside from cutesy social commentary and some nice post apocalyptic style imagery not finding the series too compelling.
Plan - power through Y the Last Man, get up to date on Chew, introduce myself to Sandman.

I'm still a little murky on what qualifies for this challenge, but the first link I happened to click on, the Alley Awards , does mention specific issues so I might seek out some of those just to build a list.

It covers a crap ton of stuff, I imagine a very high percentage of the stuff we here normally talk about qualify, but those nominations aren't something a normal person remembers so it is a bit difficult to verify what qualifies. One technique is to glance through a link of awards and see what you own.

If there's something you're interested in reading, google the title and "Eisner" or just "award." You'll likely find that it's won something.

Feel obligated to read a romance comic today. Not sure if it qualifies, but the new anthology Fresh Romance looks like it'll be my choice; or maybe some of the old Simon and Kirby Young Romance. Anyone ever read either?

I've bought a couple Simon-Kirby books but haven't read them. I might like the idea of them better than reading them.

That's what I expect with these and with pretty much any comic written before 1970 as well. But I feel the need to own a fair representation of the era because .... History! or something.....

First time in one of these challenges. So go easy, please.
Read:
- All-Star Superman -Looks like it won some Eisners, Harvey awards, and Eagle Awards.
- Civil War - Looks like it won a Harvey for Best Single Issue. Looking forward to this one, as I really like some of Millar's other work.
Next Up:
- The Boys
On Deck:
- Planetary

Today's the 30 year anniversary of the release of The Dark Knight Returns issue 1; I think I'll read it tonight. Pretty sure it got at least one award nomination.
Edit to add much later: I can't remember what I read this month, so I guess this is my list post.

Re: The 2nd Annual DVDTalk Eisner Comic Book Challenge - February 2016
I was hoping to get a lot of reading done over the weekend, but we had family stuff and I got sick. My goal of hitting 100 seems unlikely, but hopefully I can still make it to 90 by the end of the day.
