Re: Vilmos Zsigmond- RIP

Haskell Wexler, Laszlo Kovacs and Vilmos Zsigmond were the superstars of cinematography when I was coming up as a film buff, Wexler for IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR, Kovacs for EASY RIDER, FIVE EASY PIECES and POCKET MONEY, and Zsigmond for MCCABE AND MRS. MILLER, DELIVERANCE and THE LONG GOODBYE, among others. And then Gordon Willis joined them with KLUTE and THE GODFATHER. I remember seeing POCKET MONEY and being aware that Kovacs was the cinematographer and marveling at his touch. I think these guys should be given more credit for the role they played in making cinema of that era so distinct. Sad to say they are all gone now.

I once attended a revival screening of Ghostbusters that was attended by Zsigmond and Laszlo Covacks. They sat next to each other and giggled like school boys. They seemed like great friends. Sad that this era of craftsmanship is passing away.

They escaped from Soviet-ruled Hungary together in 1956. There was a great documentary on Independent Lens a year or two ago:

Sorry to hear he died, but he led an interesting life.
