The 2nd Annual DVDTalk TV/Movie Comic Book Challenge - January 2016
What's a Comic Book Challenge?
- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations
How does it work?
- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter
What makes it a "challenge"?
- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)
Who can participate?
- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not
When does it start and end?
- it begins at dusk on the 31st, and ends at dawn on the 1st
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges
How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages
Who wins?
- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day
What is the schedule?
January - TV/Movie/Book
February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

Sorry for the late posting, happy New Year everyone.
This month the plan is to concentrate on any comic derived from or made into a TV show, movie, serial, podcast, or radio show.
Maybe I'll start with that Star Wars bundle from Dark Horse that I regretably couldn't resist.

Star Wars is the obvious candidate here, though I also have some unread Serenity.
"Made into a show or movie" really opens things up.

I just bought a bunch of the Zorro/Django mini, so I'm sure that's on my list. I also got the first Batmanga book for Christmas.

I just realized the Jonah Hex in my Graphic Ink: Darwyn Cooke totally counts!
On a more directly TV-to-comic front, I read a Steed and Mrs. Peel book I'd randomly picked up on sale. Pretty good, and captures the spirit of the show. Maybe I should've read it during last year's Avengers challenge.
Graphic Ink: Darwyn Cooke: Jonah Hex*
1/22
Steed and Mrs. Peel: The Golden Game*
1/29
Batman Annuals #2
1/30
Superman by Jose Luis Garcia

After watching Jessica Jones on Netflix I've been reading the Alias series again. Interesting to see how close they stuck to the comics in parts. Did Bendis get anything in the Netflix credits?

I've read Alias but haven't watched Jessica Jones yet. I figured it would heavily lean on Alias since that run is what made the character popular. Since Bendis didn't technically create Jessica Jones as a character, I doubt he gets a credit.

Bendis is listed as a consulting producer in the opening credits, and right before Melissa Rosenberg's credit there's a full screen "Based on the character on the Marvel Comics By Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos" credit.

Kinda sad, but I only got in the equivalent of 3 issues (the first three chapters of Master Keaton Vol. 3) for this challenge. I should have more reading time this month though for the Eisner challenge.

Too bad I missed this. I have two Incredible Hulk digests, one a reprint of the original run, and another of the era that included the origin of the Abomination. Would have been perfect if I could have found them in my attic.
