Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office

With pre-sales already over $50M domestically, this will beat Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 for biggest opening day. I honestly believe this might be the first film to do $100M in a single day.

If it does $100M on a single day, it will destroy Jurassic World for biggest opening weekend.

If the film meets fans' expectations and WOM is positive, this film is going to be a freight train destroying everything in its path. This is opening right when people's vacations begin and kids leave for winter break. Those first two weeks of the film's box office are going to be fucking insane.

Is there a window on these presales? $50mm for showings only on OW, or is that throughout the month? That's a big difference.

Either way, I think this can def do $100mm in a single day and, whether it's good or not, it could eclipse JW's record, too. I know Dec isn't traditionally a month for record breaking but as many articles have pointed out, we're in uncharted waters given the hype behind this release.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office

I think it's going to be a fantastic movie and WOM will be outstanding. However, considering that it's impossible that it's worse than Avatar and Jurassic World was a fine movie but not the greatest, it doesn't really matter. The presales and the hype show it's going to blow all the records away.

I think its gonna break all records, I also think that Harrison Ford isn't gonna walk away with a penny less than 100 million when it does.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office

Doing the math, assuming tickets prices are $9.50 for adults, and I'm taking my wife, I'm going to guesstimate about $20.

I could be slightly off on those numbers but it'll make at least $20. I would like to see another installment in the series so I'm hoping it makes more, heck maybe even double my guess!

As long as there are no serious threats to safety, it will open huge.

Its legs will depend on how well it connects with audiences, I'd say $500m minimum though. I know it will have my money... as soon as it's released digitally so I can watch it at home.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office

I think it'll make over $600M and surpass both Titanic and Jurassic World, but not quite get to Avatar's record. $760M is a very high bar to clear.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office

I think it will open HUGE but to break all the records it has to be a good to great film. I am not sure it will be. Lots of people thought Avengers 2 was going to break all the records too.

It's tracking pretty poorly, but I think it will at least recoup it's budget and marketing costs.

Re: Predict Star Wars: The Force Awakens' box office

I'm not impressed with monetary totals these days (due to inflation).

If anything, I would be impressed with it beating Titanic's record of "Consecutive Weekends At #1"

Titanic was #1 at the box office for 15 consecutive weekends. That's insane.

Yeah, but did it play continuously at the same theatre for over a year like the original SW? It did at the Century 22 in San Jose, CA. I've heard as much as 60 other theatres did, also.

That's a little different. Star Wars was limited to one screen per market(mostly). It took months until you could walk up and buy a ticket, and go right in.
Don't know all the details but theaters had to bid for Star Wars and one screen per market got the movie. Seating capacity had something to do with winning the bid. In Kansas City the I-70 Drive-In was considered the largest capacity theater in the area. They put in the winning bid but didn't get the movie. They sued Fox and I believe they won.
I remember the one year anniversary at the same theater. The newspaper ad was a birthday cake with C3PO and R2D2 figures as cake tops.
It was pretty common back then for one single screen theater to have an exclusive even in a large metro area. Others I remember, Empire Strikes Back, Jaws, Alien, Superman(1978), Apocalypse Now.
There used to be a theater in KC called the Empire. You had to walk down this hallway to get to the bathroom. The hallway was called The Hall of Fame. On the walls were framed posters of movies that had played there for a minimum of 26 consecutive weeks. There was a plaque beneath each poster with the number of weeks engraved on it. Only two I recall are Lawrence of Arabia and Ice Station Zebra.
I remember The Sound of Music playing over two years consecutive at same theater when it came out.
