Elementary (CBS) -- Season 4 Thread -- premieres 11/05/15

Elementary: Papa Holmes Is Here! (Whether Sherlock Likes It or Not)
by Hanh Nguyen | Nov 4, 2015 9:05 PM EST

Sherlock's dad is in town, but don't expect a happy reunion.

When Elementary returns Thursday (10/9c, CBS), Fringe and Sleepy Hollow star John Noble enters as Morland Holmes, Sherlock's wealthy and estranged father, who got Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) into rehab and set him up with former sober companion Joan Watson (Lucy Liu). Despite this good turn, the famed detective has never spoken of his dad fondly. "Over the years, Sherlock has conjured certain images of him ... certainly Satan, on one occasion, to Dracula," series creator Rob Doherty tells TVGuide.com. "We've left it to the viewers' imagination. We can only take Sherlock's word for it because he's the only character on the show who has actually met Morland face to face."

Morland has flown to New York from London after hearing of his son's unfortunate relapse after Sherlock beat up his former dealer Oscar Rankin (Michael Weston), who had lied to and manipulated him on a case. "[Morland] is there because he sympathizes," Doherty says. "He knows that Sherlock was forced into a position in which a relapse was almost inevitable. He appreciates the work that Sherlock did, and feels that ultimately Sherlock was a victim of a crime. It's not fair to put this work in and have someone take it from you."

"The Past Is Parent" -- 10/9c

With Holmes' and Watson's consultancy with the NYPD in jeopardy due to Holmes' relapse and violent behavior, Holmes concentrates on the case of a missing wife believed to have been killed by her husband to try to get back in the department's good graces. Concerned about his son's recent behavior, Sherlock's estranged father arrives for a visit, on the fourth season premiere of ELEMENTARY, Thursday, Nov. 5 (10:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT), on the CBS Television Network.

I imagine it will be hard for them to make good on Sherlock's past descriptions of his father.

I know John Noble has been on like a hundred TV shows but as soon as he turned around I wanted to hear him say something about LSD in Walter Bishop's voice.

I enjoyed most of the episode except hey look it's David Zayas, who's way too famous for such a bit part so he must be the killer.

Re: Elementary (CBS) -- Season 4 Thread -- Thursdays starting 11/05/15

I like Elementary fine enough, but not enough that the events of last season have stuck with me in a memorable way.

The show has been off for 5 months and, with football on, they haven't shown any reruns, so those flashes back to what Sherlock had done (in show time just a week ago) weren't helping.

Given how absent Father Holmes has been, does it seem likely Noble will become enough of a presence to push the series to some new places?

How long before the show resets to Holmes and Watson "happily" working for the NYPD again?

That pretty much happens in all detective shows: Hawaii 5-0, Grimm, Castle, Bones, Criminal Minds, the varies CSIs, et al.

At least Law and Order eventually realized it eventually and started to mix it up and not have the known actor be the killer, but it is still really common.

Re: Elementary (CBS) -- Season 4 Thread -- Thursdays starting 11/05/15

I didn't mind it so much on L&O because at least the roles usually turned out to have a little substance to them once they got to the legal part of the episode. It's annoying in cases like this one where all they really needed was a warm body to fill the part.

It could be like last year where Gina Gershon was in the premiere and came back later in the season, but it doesn't seem like they were setting that up.

I actually think they had that planned out. Her trying to kill Joan brought Joan back into the fold and gave them a way to remind the audience of Moriarty.

I think Moriarty shows up again this year at some point.

I meant that it didn't seem like they were going to do that with Zayas' character this time. To be fair I didn't expect Gershon to return either, even though I agree that it was likely planned ahead of time.

They mixed things up a bit last season, but I don't know how much they can do with Aidan Quinn and Det. Marcus being main cast members.

I'll probably wait until the full season is done before watching this or until there are a few episode out to watch all at once. Glad to hear people are liking the start.

One of the reasons we don't make these crime shows a priority anymore. This is true for almost every crime series with criminal of the week episodes. But it does actually become humorous when the same actors make the rounds and are the criminal of the week on multiple series.

I really hope they make Noble a regular. Always a favorite. Even during some of the lame parts of Sleeping Hollow.

Glad to hear the name Moriarty thrown around. She needs to come back. So Hot!

That is the thing that bothers me about this show...why they feel they needed to mess with them working with NYPD. Pretty sure Holmes will find something on the one person who does not want them working for NYPD and blackmail his way back in.

I would hope the nature of crimes they investigate changes for the better outside the NYPD. I think that was the impetus behind this change.

Re: Elementary (CBS) -- Season 4 Thread -- Thursdays starting 11/05/15

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but I envision them getting Watson back in with the NYPD while Holmes works on bigger mysteries with the NSA/FBI/CIA with Noble chiming in from time to time. Occasionally Holmes helps Watson as needed.

edit - Wishfull thinking. Back at the NYPD after some convenient, unspecific string pulling by Daddy.

We so may dump this show short of any episodes with Moriarty.

Ratings have cratered for Elementary. This is almost certainly its last season.

Is there a good place to check for ratings? I recall this one I saw someone post that was really good for checking how well shows did and are doing.

Tvbythenumbers.com is the best source. The posters there on the other hand are the worst. Bunch of obnoxious 20-somethings who think they're TV executives and schedulers.

Re: Elementary (CBS) -- Season 4 Thread -- Thursdays starting 11/05/15

Just watched the 2nd episode from Nov. 12th. Had to have been one of the dullest episodes to date. So working with the FBI just means the exact same cases, just with different supporting actors vs. the ones from the NYPD? :P The episode was a chore to get through, and all the stuff with his father is coming off as equally dull.
