Men in Black: International (2019, D: Gray) S: Hemsworth, Thompson, Neeson

You produced Men in Black. Has there been talk of reviving that franchise with the new Sony regime?

PARKES We're in the middle of it. It's very active.

Is Will Smith going to be part of it?

PARKES Most likely no.

MACDONALD It will be reinvented as a trilogy.

Sony Sets ‘Men In Black’ Spinoff For Summer, 2019; Script by ‘Iron Man’ Team Holloway & Marcum
by Mike Fleming Jr
September 29, 2017 11:04am

EXCLUSIVE: The Men in Black are back. Sony Pictures has fast tracked a spinoff of its billion-dollar alien franchise. The studio today will stake out a May 17, 2019, release date for an untitled film that has a script by Matt Holloway & Art Marcum, the writers of Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight.

Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones aren’t expected to reprise, but the film acknowledges and builds on the world they inhabited. Holloway & Marcum have scripted a contemporary sci-fi pic about the black-clad secret force that protects earth from the alien scum of the universe, focusing on new characters chasing villains that put the picture on more of a global scale than the two previous films. The ambition is akin to the way that Jurassic World rebooted and expanded that franchise. The MiB spinoff film is being produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. They are actively involved in meeting with top directors right now and expect to land one quickly.

The project is a surprise, because it was expected that the next Men in Black movie would be a mashup with another Sony Pictures hit franchise, 21 Jump Street, with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill’s characters donning the black suits. That idea remains in development, but the spinoff is moving quickly and will come first. Sony, which separately is rebooting its Charlie’s Angels reboot with Elizabeth Banks directing and Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong’o in talks.

The studio also is moving on multiple fronts with its Spider-Man universe, working simultaneously on a Phil Lord & Christopher Miller-scripted animated film for Christmas 2018, as well as the Ruben Fleischer-directed Tom Hardy-Michelle Williams starrer Venom to be released October 5, 2018, and Silver & Black, with Gina Prince-Bythewood directing the two female superheroes in the Spidey universe for February 8, 2019. There is also the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, with Jon Watts directing Tom Holland and the Zendaya-led ensemble. That will be released July 5, 2019.

Parkes confirmed the Men in Black spinoff. “It’s so rare to get to the end of the script and know you’re holding a movie in your hands, but Art and Matt have written a spinoff that somehow is true to the core of the MiB world and yet expands the franchise to a fresh new place,” he said.

David Beaubaire is overseeing for Sony.

I wish MIB 23 Jump Street would've happened.

That crossover sounded bad from the beginning in my opinion. A new MIB film could be fun I suppose. It really depends on who they get to star. Smith and Jones are going to be a tough duo to replace. Brolin worked as the young Agent K in Men in Black 3 I guess but that film still had Smith and Jones too.

Just so long as Melissa McCarthy isn't involved, I'm fine with this.

Desperate for franchises at least. Spider-Man was surely a hit.

If there's one thing the Independence Day sequel taught us last year, it's that American movie-goers are desperate for reboots of twenty year old Will Smith vehicles that don't feature Will Smith.

My first thought as well. "Women in Black". It could work either way, in my opinion. What is key is the chemistry between the two leads. You can't put just anyone in those suits.

Re: Men in Black (rebooted trilogy) coming

Yea sure why not.

1. Find something special to do.

2. Link it to the original (alternate universes in a world like MIB are so easy). Follow other MIB agents (there's a well of stories there). Whatever. Don't do what Ghostbusters did and pretend the originals never happened.

One can only hope.

Seriously, there's a show on PBS that my kids likes to watch called Odd Squad that's basically Men in Black but solving math/logic problems. The schtick is that everyone is under the age of 12 and it is an extremely diverse cast. I've watched more than a few episodes with my kid and it's very funny and to be honest the diversity helps sell it.

Look, we live in the Chicago suburbs and tv shows with all white male casts simply do it for me anymore as a reflection of reality and I'm speaking as a white male.

Yeah, looks like it's out of Toronto. Maybe that explains the quirky humor.

Did the original not feature that? I seem to remember the film ending with a female agent and a black agent.

Plus, Agent J was white in the comics, so the PC thugs already ruined things 20 years ago.

Re: Men in Black (rebooted trilogy) coming

Yea. Like the Transformers or MCU movies, MIB is commercialized, light, breezy fun. It's about as ripe for continuation as it gets. Barry Sonnenfeld's signature (brisk, friendly, breezy, cartoonish, comical) style is all over them. It sounds like they're going to change that up. I hope they connect it to the other MIB movies, and continue on with other agents, or a parallel universe. And it's not a complete restart with K and J.

I thought MIB 3 was a very solid, moving, noble end to a trilogy. I wouldn't have expected it to be any better than it was. The multiple-futures guy was great. The story coming together in the last five minutes was about a good (an manipulative) as it gets and added new perspective to the first film (and I supposed we have to recognize the forgettable second film).
