Bruce Springsteen to release "The River" box set 12/4

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/ne...x-set-20151015

While not the best of Springsteen's early albums, it still contains some of his best songs (along with a lot of filler). And the tour was epic.

It was the album that forced me to get a CD player. I had worn out five vinyl and cassette copies and was not going to buy it again.

Good parts: The song "Cindy," long considered one of Springsteen's best unreleased songs will finally see the light of day. The epic Tempe, AZ shown, and recorded the day Reagan was first elected president, is the concert video DVD.

Not so good parts: One of my favorite bootleg songs, "Chevrolet Deluxe," is not part of the set. Also, the concert video is not a complete show.

I'm hoping that, when Bruce does this for "Born in the USA," it includes the complete "Murder, Inc." album.

I have the Born to Run set and its pretty good but doesn't even compare to what this will be from the sounds of it. The River actually is one of the only Springsteen albums I don't own so I'll likely pick this up at some point if the price is low enough.

The River is a solid record, but it was already too long as a double-album.

Fill me in on this. Is that something that was shelved and then they recorded Born in the USA instead?

It's still only a double album. The other CDs are unreleased bonus tracks.

Springsteen almost released an album called Murder, Inc in 1983, a year before Born in the U.S.A. It had a lot of the same songs, but was more downbeat that the finished album.

The title track was on the Greatest Hits CD in 1996.

Jon Landau convinced Springsteen he needed a more commercial album after the very uncommercial Nebraska.

The track listing was

BORN IN THE U.S.A.
MURDER INCORPORATED
DOWNBOUND TRAIN
GLORY DAYS
THIS HARD LAND
MY LOVE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN
JOHNNY BYE BYE
FRANKIE
I'M GOIN DOWN
WORKING ON THE HIGHWAY
I'M ON FIRE

I thought I had heard all the outtakes from this era, but never heard this one before. I like it. A lot.

Interesting. I'm glad Landau managed to persuade him. Some good songs there (notably "I'm on Fire"), but overall not as rousing a tracklist as B.i.t.U., with such entries as "No Surrender", one of Bruce's greatest songs.

Agreed. I'm a big fan of Nebraska, but b2b albums like that likely wouldn't have done any favors for his career. Interesting about this new River set. Already have the album, but am curious to listen to the bonus material.

Re: Bruce Springsteen to release "The River" box set 12/4

Their shipping can be a little dodgy (sometimes it shows up a day or two before release date, sometimes it shows up a day or two later), but importcds.com has this on sale for under $80 now in both editions, which is much cheaper than any other I've seen. If you use the code TENOFF for today only, you get another 10% off, which basically cancels out the standard shipping.

I ordered both of the last Beach Boys box sets from them and have no complaints. I think the last one showed up the Saturday before the Tuesday release date while the Smile Sessions showed up the Saturday after.

Thanks for the Heads-up. Bruce hasn't played Vegas in the dozen years I've lived here, but with the brand-new arena opening in April, I figure he probably will this tour. I hope I don't have to use the secondary market, but I will if I need to. If he's here, I'm going.

Re: Bruce Springsteen to release "The River" box set 12/4

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band launch The River Tour 2016, a nine-week US trek, on Jan. 16 in Pittsburgh. The announcement of the tour coincides with today’s release of “The Ties That Bind: The River Collection,” a comprehensive look at the era of the 1980 “The River” album that “Rolling Stone” calls “Springsteen’s best archival release yet.”

Each night of the tour will be mixed for release on Live.BruceSpringsteen.net as high-quality downloads and CDs. Recordings will be available within days of each performance.

The original The River Tour began Oct. 3, 1980, two weeks before the release of Springsteen’s fifth album, and continued through Sept. 4, 1981. With sets that regularly approached the four-hour range, the 140-date international tour firmly established a reputation for Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band as marathon performers.

Tickets to The River Tour go on sale Dec. 11.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band 2016 US Tour Dates:

Jan 16 Pittsburgh, PA Consol Energy Center
Jan 19 Chicago, IL United Center

Still no Vegas. But since these tour dates end before the Arena opens, playing the opening show for the venue is still in play. Expensive, but would be memorable event. I was at the first concert at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis in 1999. It was an E-Street Band concert and it was pretty great -- even though the sound was all messed up for that first show. Billy Joel later remarked that he'd heard that even basketball sounds bad in that venue.

Re: Bruce Springsteen to release "The River" box set 12/4

I missed seeing Springsteen and the E Street Band a couple years ago for the Wrecking Ball tour so I'd like to try and go to the show in Saint Paul. They're one of the only bands I haven't seen live that I'd like to see. My only issue is I'd rather there be more of a variety rather than hearing The River in full. I know they tend to play longer shows though so I would guess probably around half the show or so would be songs from The River and then half whatever else.

I was able to get tix to both MSG, Newark, and Philly shows. I'll see how the setlist are for the first 2 shows and the first MSG before I decide to go to the rest.

I couldn't get decent tix for the first L.A. show. Will try again when the second show goes on sale on 5pm PST.

Ugh the only tickets I can find are $150 a piece. A bit more than I'd like to spend as much as I'd like to see him.

Bruce Springsteen is set to add Las Vegas to the list of stops on his recently announced 24-show River Tour 2016.

The run is slated to begin on January 16th in Pittsburgh, and it was scheduled to end March 17th in Los Angeles. But it looks like there will be one more show – in Sin City of all places.

Bruce and his longtime backers, the E Street Band, will likely be playing March 19th at The Joint (4,000 seats) located inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Vegas.

HBO will air the concert – either live or at a later date.

Well shit, that won't be an easy ticket. Plus it's SRO so the Mrs won't go with me -- she hates standing up all concert. I've seen a few shows there (by myself usually) including the Foo Fighters. It's a nice intimate venue but damb those tickets will be hard to get and pricey on the secondary market.

How did you find that info? I'm Googling "Bruce Springsteen River Tour Las Vegas" and I find nothing about this show.

And BTW : In case you were wondering, the opening concert for the new Arena will be The Killers with special guest Wayne Newton. Seriously. I know, totally lame and disappointing, but I bought tix anyway because it will be an event.

Not official yet. Just rumors. Definitely wouldn't be an easy ticket. That is during March Madness I believe right? And on a Saturday night...in a club... So... yea...

The Killers are hometown boys. Not too surprising to open a Vegas arena.

Re: Bruce Springsteen to release "The River" box set 12/4

Bruce Springsteen is extending his River Tour 2016 – reportedly, adding more than a dozen shows. The formal announcement is expected to come some time this week.

The Las Vegas show, which was to take place at The Joint at the Hard Rock Casino & Hotel, has been scrapped as has the HBO broadcast of the concert. The cancellation is possibly due to the inability of management on both sides – the Hard Rock and Springsteen – to come to terms on ticket prices. Instead of Vegas, a third Los Angeles show has been added for March 19th (see full extended schedule below); it is very unlikely that HBO will be involved.

Springsteen and The E Street Band will extend their River Tour 2016 into the Northwest and Midwest as well as hitting the South (North Carolina) before heading back to Bruce’s home base in the Northeast.

There’s more good news. European dates are expected to be added for the early summer, and there is also talk of a possible U.S. stadium tour later this summer.

Here are the tour stops that are expected to be released later this week. All cities and dates are tentative so proceed with caution. The on-sale date remains unknown.

Los Angeles, CA – March 19 (third show)
Portland, OR – March 22
Seattle, WA – March 24
San Jose, CA – March 29
Denver, CO – March 31
Oklahoma City, OK – TBD
Auburn Hills, MI – TBD
Dallas, TX – TBD
Kansas City, MO – TBD
Greensboro, NC – April 10
Columbus, OH – TDB
Penn State, University Park, PA – April 18
Baltimore, MD – April 20
Brooklyn, NY – April 22
Brooklyn, NY – April 24
