Gamera (2016?, D: Katsuhito Ishii)
Apparently Gamera went to Comic Con this year.

This is the proof of concept trailer for what they're going for.

I've always liked Gamera, the Kaiju. I've never liked his films though. Especially the older ones who were just too cheap looking for me as a kid when I had Godzilla around in that same era too. But I couldn't hate that there was a giant flying turtle that kicked Kaiju ass. Just something about that I can't hate.
Granted I probably haven't seen the films he's had in the past 15 years or whatever. They any good? I always hated how it never really meshed w/ me, the tones they went for.

Katsuhito Ishii to Direct Gamera Movie
The director dropped by New York Comic Con to show off the Gamera trailers.
To celebrate the kaiju’s 50th anniversary, writer/director Katsuhito Ishii joined producers Shinichiro Inoue and Tsuyoshi Kikuchi in New York to show off the proof-of-concept trailer they put together for the flying turtle’s return to the big screen.
They announced that the film’s effects would be CGI, and they are looking forward to a 2016 release date at the earliest. The producers cited the success of recent kaiju films like Pacific Rim and the 2014 Godzilla as inspiration for Gamera’s return. Ishii is known for being the animation director for the anime segment of Kill Bill vol.1, and the writer of the anime film Redline.

Gamera The Brave was a decent family movie.

Too much PACIFIC RIM in that clip, not enough Gamera. I need a man-in-a-rubber-suit to believe it's Gamera.
Hell, even the sentai series toyed with CGI for the zords in the early 2000s, but gave it up and went back to man-in-a-zord-suit-on-miniature sets mode.
From Power Rangers Super Megaforce (but originally shot for Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger):

I'm so behind on these movies, I'm still working my way through the original run from the 60's.
But this looked really cool.

Anyway, great news that Kadokawa is bringing Gamera back. Godzilla and Gamera films in the works simulataneously in Japan hasn't happened in a long time. The genre is thriving.
