Classic movies you just don't like?

So on a friend's recommendation i put in my All About Eve disc...

while i don't deny its' merit and really good acting, i just don't really like it. i know it won awards and was heralded, which is what prompted me to add to collection, but it just doesn't do it for me and i am a little disappointed.

The Godfather movies--any of them. They don't do anything for me. I'll take Goodfellas any day of the week--it's far more compelling a story.

Wizard of Oz, it is a solid film... I just don't care for it.

I've always thought Vertigo was a little stupid from Kim Novak's character's POV.

I won't say I dislike the films but I sort of agree about The Godfather Trilogy. They're well made and acted but I honestly find them sort of boring and they aren't films I find myself wanting to watch very often. Goodfellas is amazing and its one of those films I watch once a year or so plus if it's on TV I find myself tuning in and watching the rest of it from where it's at.

Vertigo works mainly because of the style Hitchcock gave it. Just thinking over the plot soon leads to the realization that it's quite preposterous. (I mean, yeah, if you think about it, "Vertigo" is on the level of "Reindeer Games" for degree of preposterousness.)

But I'm still a fan of Vertigo because it's so well made and there's so much else there that I can ignore the problems with its plot.

Goodfellas over Godfathers 1 & 2?? Kids today...

Anyway, mine is Doctor Zhivago. It's a beautiful shot film, wonderful to look at, but it's so hollow at the core.

Agreed on both counts

My choice would be 2001: A Space Snooze-fest

I actually have the same answer as you. All About Eve does nothing for me...and I love classic Hollywood movies.

In the last six months I've given both Goddard's Breathless and Fellini's 8-1/2 another try. Nope.

This also. I own the BD because I'm more interested in its production than the actual product that came at the end.

Not sure if I'd call it classic but Scarface is another film that many seem to regard highly that I don't care for much.

Re: Classic movies you just don't like?

Not sure if it counts as a classic movie already, but I don't care for Full Metal Jacket, especially after a strong beginning at boot camp, then the rest of the movie feels like it just meanders.

I'm guessing you're talking about the de Palma one. Yeah, it's a classic by now. Over 30 years old now.

The only people that like it are rappers and douchebags, so I will never watch it. My pick for this topic would be Casablanca, only saw it once in a film studies class in college, and didn't care for it.

Re: Classic movies you just don't like?

Third on All About Eve. That's the only "Old" film where I had to stop the movie (Halfway through) and say outloud, "Why am I watching this?" I eventually did finish it a few years later.

Others:

The Maltese Falcon-Don't remember one notable thing about it.
The Apartment-^Ditto
Rules of the Game-The only thing I remember about it is the rabbit massacre. Is that good or bad?
Stalag 17-The prisoners seem to be having the time of their lives at that camp. Why would they want to escape?
Lawrence of Arabia-Yeah,yeah, It's a visual beauty and all, but had we not seen Lawrence die in England (That's not a spoiler since it's the opening scene of the frickin' movie) then there actually might have been some suspense when he's in Arabia.

It's always looked like this to me:

Every scene that takes place inside Rick's club
Every other scene

Maybe this one can inspire/resurrect a "refuse to watch" thread.

I like Scarface, but not for the reasons why rappers like it. It's not The Godfather or Goodfellas, but it does capture a time period/culture of early 80s Miami that has never been duplicated, and inspired later ganger movies like New Jack City, and video games like GTA: Vice City.

Okay, you've convinced me. I'm adding All About Eve to my Netflix queue.

Yeah I should have clarified but the original doesn't seem to get talked about very often.

Also I know that it's regarded as one of the best films of all time and it achieved a lot from a technical standpoint for its time but I've never cared about Citizen Kane whatsoever. Boring film that I don't care about watching again.

I think that is how many view Doctor Zhivago. A beautiful film with fine performances, the script may have been written by aliens with no intrinsic understanding of human emotions. I think it would be largely forgotten today if Lean hadn't directed it.

Seconded. 2001 is my least-favorite film from one of my least-favorite directors. I can recognize its importance, but I don't enjoy it...and I've tried over and over again.
