Weekend Box Office - 8/14/15 - 8/16/15 - Straight Outta Compton to top the charts
Not that there's a ton of competition.
Straight Outta Compton made $4.96m during its Thursday preview window, that's nearly a million more than Mission Impossible Rogue Nation made. Fandango is reporting 70% of all pre-purchase ticket sales are going to Compton as well.
The expectation for this weekend is that it will draw more than $40m, likely into the $50s.
Also opening this weekend is Guy Ritchie's update to The Man from U.N.C.L.E. with Armie Hammer, Henry Cavill, and Alicia Vikander. It is estimated to take $15 - $20m for the weekend. It made $900k during Thursday previews.
Holdovers include Fantastic Four, which is expected to take a huge drop from last weekends sub-par opening. Mission Impossible Rogue Nation which continues to hold extremely well and will likely see a comparatively soft 35% - 40% drop this weekend, and The Gift which should hold up decently.
Other noteworthy things: Minions crossed the $300m domestic threshold as Universal's ridiculously successful year continues with Compton this weekend. Minions is currently at $917.9m worldwide, and will likely be another $1b grosser for Universal when all is said and done (it still hasn't opened in China, Greece, or Italy). Inside Out is currently at $637m worldwide. Ant-man crossed $150m domestic ($330m worldwide).
Shaun the Sheep is doing poorly ($7.8m after a full week), hopefully word of mouth can rescue it.
The daily per-theater highest grossing movie during the week that's in semi-wide release right now is still Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F. It is set to expand to 900+ theaters today.

I saw U.N.C.L.E. last night and there were probably 30-40 people at our screening. When we left you could see tons of folks heading over to the SOC hall. Our ArcLight also got extra security.

Zero interest in SOC for me, but I will likely see Man From U.N.C.L.E. tonight.

Glad to see Compton is already doing well. Man From UNCLE looks terrible. It'll be gone from theaters soon.

$2M for Fantastic Four on Friday which probably means a $6-7M weekend or about a 72% drop.

Saw the 6pm showing (first showing I believe) tonight. 20 people in the theater. Although the mall I went to is pretty much a mellow, family type outdoor mall. I thought there would be more people though.

Why the hate for UNCLE? Looks fun and has good RT scores. I haven't seen many films in the theater this summer, but could be a good end of summer flick to go catch.

What hate? It just didn't appeal to the masses. Probably could do well overseas and could have good holds in the following weeks. Also don't discount the competition Mission Impossible 5 still has on it (interestingly, Cruise was originally set to star in UNCLE before dropping out to do MI5).

SOC looks good but I'll wait for home video. I'm more interested in UNCLE but the mixed reviews scream wait for a matinee.

I called SoC being a big hit a while back. It had all the ingredients of making a lot of $$$: great marketing, it's the only major summer movie to target an urban audience, and it's from Universal.

It's their best year period. Almost $2B in domestic grosses and it's only mid-August. The all-time record is Warner with $2.105.7B back in 2009, which Uni should easily pass in a matter of weeks.

Box Office: 'Straight Outta Compton' Debuts to Scorching $56.1 Million
^I've always wondered where the heck do they get those stats from?
LOS ANGELES, (Variety.com) - "Straight Outta Compton" may take place more than two decades ago, but its themes of racial tension, poverty, and police brutality still speak to moviegoers living in a post-Ferguson world.
The biopic about rap group N.W.A. debuted to a blistering $56.1 million this weekend in 2,757 theaters, surpassing "American Pie 2" to become the biggest ever August debut for an R-rated movie. It's the kind of opening usually reserved for so-called "tentpole movies" that trade in costumed heroes and special effects, not urban violence.
The film's opening weekend crowd was 52% female, 51% under the age of 30, 46% African American, 23% Caucasian, 21% Hispanic, and 4% Asian. It did not play in Imax or 3D, but did score in premium large format locations, grossing $5.1 million, which represented 9% of the film's weekend receipts.
