Weekend B.O. Thread - 7/31/2015 - 8/2/2015 - People skipping Vacation to see M:I5

Vacation made $2.5m on Thursday, placing it in 3rd behind Minions (#1) and Ant-man (#2). It has grossed $6.3m so far (incl. Tuesday previews) and is expected to be in the low to mid-$20s by the end of the weekend ($15.5m weekend)

MI5 (Rogue Nation, whatever) pulled $4m last night, Friday is looking to be about $18m with an anticipated $45 - $50m opening (Tracking up until now suggested $40m - $45m), I wouldn't be surprised if it opens in the low to mid $50s.

Other estimates include:
Minions with $15m - $16m, it will be close with Vacation.
Ant-man with $12M
Pixels with $9m - $10m
Southpaw with $9m - $10m

Hope Southpaw beats Pixels this weekend. Kind of shocked Vacation will actually get $20m. That's got to be pretty good.

Estimates for Southpaw were lowered to about $7.5m. Vacation won't crack $20m for the 5 day, M:I5 is now squarely in the low $50m zone (it'll likely be higher imho).

Surprised that Pixels didn't find the typical "family" audience.

Jurassic World is still chomping towards Titanic's $658m gross. don't know if it will make it at this point, but it is getting close with $631M.

Just a bit over $20 million. Should easily break it.

So I guess Terminator died out at $86mil? I finally got to see it at the dollar cinema. I kind of regret it now, although it's always nice seeing the Guhvanator back in his most iconic role. But boy was it a horrible fucking mess.

As I think most of us expected, M:I5 opened to an estimated $56m this weekend instead of "mid to high $40s".

Vacation wound up with $14.85M, and a five-day opening of $21.17M

I wonder why the M:I movies can't open in the $100M range? Is it the Crazy Cruise factor? I mean, Pitch Perfect 2 opened to $70M. Fast & Furious 4 opened to $70M and that was years ago.

For PP2, it was about timing. The first one caught on like wildfire on home video. With Fast, it's about the ensemble while M:I is Tom Cruise and company. Decent opening, though adjusted for ticket inflation, it's actually below MI3 ($59M) and far below the first two ($83.4M and $87.1M respectively). Can't compare it to the last one since it opened in December in limited theaters.

As with many movies today, it's going to rise or fall overseas where it should do great business (Ghost Protocol made $485M OS).

its an old school action film series with no real continuity or "must see" aspect. PP2 has teen girls and the women vote in general, Fast series has a roster of big international stars.

It's an older audience seeing MI, Cruise movies.. they tend to open lower but have better longevity. I would expect MI5 to come close to PP2's 184m.

The theater I saw MI:5 in today was pretty damned full. Probably 80%. Which is huge for a movie like this at a 10:00 AM showing!

I saw Vacation in addition to M:I 5 this weekend. M:I was going to win the weekend hands down, so no question about that. I think Vacation will pull in around $45-50M before it leaves theaters. Not a disaster, but not a hit either.

And yet Quantum of Solace (2008) opened to $68M, Skyfall (2012) opened to $88M and The Bourne Ultimatum (2007) opened to $69M. There's gotta be some factor that's holding back the audience in some way. Maybe it's something like Star Trek vs Star Wars? I love ST but I'll admit that it has never been and never will be as popular as SW. Tom's star wattage has dimmed as well. He is one of the last of the great 80-90s megastars still kicking it. I guess the young kids aren't that into him.
