Hell on Wheels (AMC) -- The Final Season Thread -- Summer 2015/2016
AMC's Western drama "Hell on Wheels" will return for the first half of its fifth and final season on Saturday, July 18 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. Seven new episodes will air this summer, with the final seven episodes of the series following in 2016.
Hell on Wheels looks at the institutionalized greed and corruption behind the building of the Transcontinental Railroad as the race between the Central Pacific and Union Pacific intensifies. In Season 5, Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) finds himself a stranger in a strange land: Truckee, California. Home to the headquarters of the Central Pacific railroad, this rough mountain railroad town teems with thousands of Chinese workers who are foreign in language, culture and traditions. While grappling with the challenges of corralling his new workforce, Cullen leads the Central Pacific’s herculean effort to tunnel through the Sierra Nevada mountains, sometimes achieving only inches a day in the race to complete America’s first Transcontinental Railroad.
The Season 5 opener finds Cullen in California with the Central Pacific Railroad, building east through the mountains. As he contends with new bosses and workers, word on his family comes in from Salt Lake City.

Not really liking the drawing out of this show. Seems like that is now the AMC playbook plan. They did it with Breaking Bad and then Mad Men, now Hell On Wheels. Just as it builds momentum, it takes a hiatus.
At least it is coming back. I am glad.

Seems like a common thing to do now at AMC for final seasons. If they had some other promising material to fill in the slot, they probably wouldn't have to do this. The reasons are obvious.

I like this show, but I can't believe it keeps coming back. I'll watch it and forget about it until it comes back to wind things up.

I wasn't too sure at first, but now I'm liking the almost spinoff quality of this season. I think the only characters left on the Union Pacific were Durant, Eva, and Psalms (spelling?). Mickey and his cousin got booted and that Governor dude bogged the show down in Cheyenne too much. Now we're back to building a railroad at least. The Chinese workers are a good change of pace too. From what I recall of history the Mormon's end up finishing Durant's line anyways so I don't think there was much story left there for the remaining characters.

Yea, I was pretty surprised that Bohannon didn't just kill the Swede right then and there. Even more odd is giving him a job.
Whatever, I'll watch see this series through the end.

I've always liked this show but it's interesting how they've seemed to basically reboot it at least a couple times. I seem to have liked it more with each season for the most part, although that is TBD for this final season. I don't like the Swede still being around though. That is one weird storyline.

How is Cullen gonna finish building a railroad when he is chasing the Swede and his wife/son for the rest of the season?

The Final season Part 2 airs Saturday night on AMC
Interest in this show seems to have died a lot. There's under 20 posts in the last year. I believe season 5A is now on Netflix.
So how many of you still have the 7 episodes from last summer still unwatched because you plan to binge the season?

I found this opening episode frustrating, plot wise.
I understand they want to give Thor Gunderson a big and dramatic send off since he's been part of the show since Day 1 and the main antagonist throughout the series, but come on, Cullen should have finished drowning him in the river. This guy has caused problems for you for years, and he's trying to kill your wife and son, and you somehow decide while you're choking him underwater to let him live so he can face a judge and hang? Cullen, who's killed dozens of people himself without hesitation, makes that decision?
Yes, they tried to explain it...the Swede is also confused why he's not dead yet and Cullen gives his view (I'm not your Maker, it would give you peace if I killed you, blah blah), but it's just so contrived. Also, the Swede gets one final chance to kill Cullen himself, and doesn't because riders approach and threaten to shoot him? Who cares? You're going to die anyway, in a much worse fashion (hanging), might as well go out quick while taking out your main adversary.
I did think the flashback scene was interesting...I don't think we knew that The Swede served in the Union army and was a POW at Andersonville.

I don't watch anymore, there is simply too much quality television these days to hang on for a show past its due date.

disappointing end to the Swede. His death needed to come directly at the hands of Bohannon.
this show has been a bumblefuck of ineptitude since the death of Lilly. I'm in until the end, but just wrap it up already.

That hanging was brutal. Wife had to watch three episodes of American Pickers to get it out of her head...

Didn't like this ep. at all. What Osiris said: No reason on earth the Swede wouldn't just shoot when he had the chance, even if it meant a certain (but quick) death. Hanging scene was one of the most brutal I've ever seen, but for what purpose? Will finish this out since I've been in from the beginning, but that's about it.
