Movies that are known instead for the amazing soundtrack/song compilation
Wise ones, I ask you.
Movies that are known for original soundtrack or
compilation of songs rather than the movie itself?

Until the End of the World. Soundtrack album was hyped for having so many good artists, but I didn't know what the hell the movie was about til I rented it.

With a handful of exceptions, I'm not familiar with the soundtracks for most of the films listed so far in this thread. And those I am familiar with are for reasons other than or in addition to the soundtracks. SHAFT, for instance, may have a great soundtrack, but I remember the action and New York location shooting even more and its snapshots of Harlem, Times Square and Greenwich Village in 1971.
If there's one film so far mentioned that meets the OP's criteria I would argue that it's PURPLE RAIN. Don't remember a thing about the film other than the soundtrack.
