So this will be like the IMAX release except not cropped and not edited for time.

I bought the 15th Anniversary edition so I don't feel the need to double dip unless the remaster is substantial.

I think I only have this on HD DVD (and my player is no longer outputting audio via HDMI) so I may get this.

Re: Apollo 13: 20th Anniversary release (REMASTERED) June 2, 2015

Slightly more details on the remaster from DigitalBits.

The big news today is that we’ve confirmed that Universal’s new Apollo 13: 20th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray will feature a brand new 4K high resolution remaster with DRS and color correction scanned from the original 35mm film negative. In addition to all the previous Blu-ray extras, the new edition will also feature Apollo 13: Twenty Years Later, an “all-new retrospective featuring exclusive interviews with director Ron Howard and producer Brian Grazer.” This new film restoration is going to premiere theatrically on March 27 at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood.

Not so exiting to watch again when you know what happens in the end and everything is geared towards the ending.

That holds true of practically every movie ever made.

People knew going into the movie that the Apollo 13 astronauts didn't die, especially given that it was based on a book written by one of those astronauts.

It's like not buying a World War II movie because you already know the Nazis are defeated.

I hope this is sarcasm, as I'd hate to think about people who didn't know the ending going in.

Apparently, although you never know when it's just teens pretending they are stupid on purpose.

Re: Apollo 13: 20th Anniversary release (REMASTERED) June 2, 2015

Quote from Robert Harris:

We're going to be seeing more impeccable releases from Universal. There's an entirely new mindset in place, seeking perfection.

No more heavily degrained product. New, rock steady, image harvests on the finest of scanners. And generally, a very professional team in place from top to bottom.

I consider this the new Universal.

While older transfers will still appear, as creating new masters from original elements is both expensive, as well as time consuming, you're going to be seeing fewer of them, as new product makes its way through the production arena.

My advice is to read reviews, and grab that new product when it appears. If a release is noted on the packaging to be remastered, it will be a safe pre-order.

Much of the new work is being performed in-house, by the studio's own tech team, and they take things Very seriously.

RAH

RAH's comments must only apply to film, because UNIVERSAL certainly didn't put forward their best effort on this week's Galactica set.

FYI, that's the old 15th anniversary version. Not the upcoming restored/remastered edition.
