"The Downward Spiral" - (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (Content Rating TBD) (HDTV)
IAN SOMERHALDER MAKES HIS DIRECTORIAL DEBUT
After shutting off her humanity following the death of her mother, Caroline (Candice Accola) gives her friends an unexpected ultimatum. Not knowing how to handle the new Caroline, Stefan's (Paul Wesley) attempt to intervene sets off a dangerous chain of events, leaving him and Elena (Nina Dobrev) in a race against the clock. Meanwhile, after seeking answers from Kai (guest star Chris Wood) about the prison world, Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) world is turned upside when he learns some devastating news about his mother Lily (guest star Annie Wersching). Elsewhere, Enzo (Michael Malarkey) finds himself becoming increasingly intrigued by Sarah Salvatore (guest star Tristan Mays), and Bonnie (Kat Graham) begins to struggle with the effects of being back in the real world. Ian Somerhalder directed the episode written by Brian Young and Caroline Dries (#616). Original airdate 3/12/2015.

That was the best episode of the entire season. I know that is a low bar to jump but I like the new direction this show is taking. It looks like the showrunners heard fan complaints and are exploring new territory.
I will say I don't like how often Damon seems to emote over everything these days. He used to be a fairly nasty character and they have decided to turn him into early Stefan.

It was just ok for me. No feelings Caroline didn't payoff for me. Stefan going back again was a been there done that feeling for me.
The operation scene was good. I think they should have not had the guy pass out from getting his hands broken. Should have had him rolling around in pain instead.

VD does have a nasty habit of keeping useless minor characters around past their expiration date. That medical student should have been killed off.

I recently discovered that Candice Accola (Caroline) is prominently featured in the infomercial for Wen, a hair product. The infomercial actually has a couple of other celebrities in it as well.

Even with the been there done that feeling with part of it I liked it. As long as she did not hurt anyone I likely would have just said give Caroline her year. Of course they have to push it though.
