Marvel: Contest of Champions (mobile game)

Hey guys,
Not sure if there's interest, but I just started an alliance in the game, so wanted to see if there's anyone on here playing and not yet in an alliance (the alliance feature was just added this week).

Contest of Champions is an ios/android game which came out in December of last year. It's a Free to Play game with in-app purchases (of course). It's basically the Marvel version of Injustice, a simplified-for-mobile fighting game featuring Marvel characters, using simple tap, hold, and swipe mechanics for blocking and hitting. It's not particularly deep, and like most F2P games you'll have to really grind in order to get really good prizes. But the roster is pretty diverse if you're a marvel fan, and you get a (slight) chance for an upper level hero with a free crystal every day. They also recently made it so that if you progress in the campaign mode, you'll get a guaranteed 3* hero every time you finish an entire "Act."

Alliance name is:
dvdtalkers

I know, I know, another F2P mobile game. If there's no interest I'll just let this drop to the bottom of the forum.

I joined the alliance and I think it would be cool to get some more DVD Talkers in on it.

FWIW I've found the progression in Contest of Champions much better than Marvel Puzzle Quest.

I might reactivate my account due to the changes. I enjoyed the game for a while, but got frustrated with how difficult it was to get a better hero (even if you spent money the chances were low).

Re: Marvel: Contest of Champions (mobile game)

The other change they made fairly recently is that if you get a duplicate 2,3, or 4* hero (you can't keep two of the same kind), you not only get extra items, but the character is "awakened" and gets a signature passive ability, most of which are great. For instance, Gamora's Assassination ability gives a chance to do massive critical damage. Each time you get an extra, the signature ability improves. This is obviously not retroactive, but it could be frustrating before when you're getting dupe after dupe with the daily crystal and only getting iso for them.

What's the difference between silver star and gold star characters?

The silver stars have their signature ability unlocked.

I doubt I'd ever actually play; but I'll download the app and join the clan if the extra body would help you guys at all.

The Alliance system in this game is completely broken. The only way to get "loyalty points" is to "help" other players, but you can't help them until they run out of energy AND remember to click the "ask for help" button. There's no way to proactively earn those points.

Yeah. Half the time I don't even need the help I just want people to have points, but the request only lasts for a couple of hours and you have to do it one by one.

I can't even get into the game right now but if you have enough points to enter the cornucopia event you should at least get one or more 2* crystals out of progression.

Re: Marvel: Contest of Champions (mobile game)

I've been clicking the help me button every time I fight, but I haven't had time to play too much recently. There's got to be a better way!

Re: Marvel: Contest of Champions (mobile game)

Yeah, because the cooldown is relatively short (only 2 hours) you have to count on one of your team members being online in that timespan AND checking the alliance. Since you have to call for help individually, which takes three button presses, it's a hassle.

I can also see this being used to really up the scores for these events. For instance, what's to stop someone from creating two accounts, continually "helping" each other, and driving up their PvP scores? Or for that matter, a well-run alliance? That will make the rewards get even further out of reach for casual players. I wonder if there's a limit to how many times you can help (not that we'll ever reach it... )

Re: Marvel: Contest of Champions (mobile game)

Pulled a three star from the daily crystal; it's my third three * Gamora. On one hand, it significantly upgrades her awesome assassination power, on the other hand what are the odds that I pull the same three * character three different times?

It also gave me the option to purchase a 4* crystal... for the approximate equivalent of $75 worth of units (if I bought them). That's crazy.
