Over the years movies have gotten better at using realistic gunfire sounds instead of mixing a bunch of different sounds (like how cannon fire was used as one of the sound elements of the shotgun blasts in Terminator 2). However, one thing I notice that movies still do is use a "thwip" sound effect when someone is shown using a suppressor.

About the only movie I recall ever even attempting to reproduce the correct sound of a suppressed pistol was The Bourne Identity during the very last kill in that movie. Are there any others?

It's the sound that movie audiences associate with -- just like the metallic ringing sound of drawing a sword from a scabbard.

I'm not sure about the rest of Heat but Heat sounds so goddamn sexy in the big shootout. Cuz that's the actual sounds coming off there.

I know the reason it is in use. I also know all about the swords "singing". What I'm interested is in movies that eschew the "cinematic" sound of suppressed gunfire in favor of the real deal.

And that link reminds me of another pet peeve of mine: gun cocking sound effect whenever someone simply raises their firearm. Battle: Los Angeles did this a lot.

I haven't watched Heat in a very long time, but I don't remember suppressed gunfire in that movie. All I remember is the extremely loud gunfire, which is the complete opposite of what the OP is asking.

I wasn't talking about suppression. Just actual sounds used. A lot guns used in films aren't really represented by their actual sound.

That was taffer's point, Snake. I started this thread about realistic suppressed gunfire sounds in movies. In recent years, we have had more and more movies with realistic gunfire audio. However, realistic suppressed gunfire sounds are still a rarity.

A friend of mine suggested the home invasion scene from John Wick. However, I just checked the home invasion scene and they use the "thwip" sound for the suppressors. At least they didn't make them sound ultra silent like most movies do but they didn't sound quite right since what they did was mix the "thwip" with some real gunfire sounds and added an LFE kick. At least the relative volume (taking into account that movies top out at 105 dB) was fine when compared to John's unsuppressed firearm (he uses a muzzle brake).

godzilla rules

At the end of the home invasion scene, the police show up because the neighbors called them. When asked the cop replies that it was because of the noise. So Wick's gun is closer to being a proper suppressor than other movies.

Wick didn't use a suppressor. He used a muzzle brake. Totally different function. That said, though the suppressor audio for handguns in the movie during that and the Miss Perkins fight were all wrong, the suppressor fire of Dafoe's rifle sounded pretty accurate.

And, as I mentioned, even if the actual sound was wrong, at least the amplitude seemed correct (relative to the limitations of the dynamic range of a movie soundtrack). Leading to the noise complaint you mentioned.

I hate this. Hollywood always has someone chamber a round, especially pump shotguns, when they should have had one loaded already.
