Edgar Froese (of Tangerine Dream), dead at 70

Not a massive fan of his music, but he was extremely influential. R.I.P.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30965708

Edgar Froese, the founding member of the German electronic group Tangerine Dream, has died in Vienna, aged 70.

Froese died unexpectedly on Friday after a pulmonary embolism, his son, Jerome, said.

Yeah, this sucks. I was a fan of their music and their film scores.

I'll throw in my DVD of Miracle Mile in tribute. (one of the best film scores, not mention films, ever.)

As a big time fan of Tangerine Dream, this is bummer news. Thankfully, he left us with LOADS of fantastic work, so I don't feel too terrible. His legacy will endure for a long, long time.

Now, time to crank up Tangents for the next few hours...

Re: Edgar Froese (of Tangerine Dream), dead at 70

Well, that sucks. I've always loved their music- though I started with their mid-80s stuff, then I blind-bought their very first album "Electronic Meditation" recorded in 1969 and wasn't quite prepared for what I heard there but later grew to like it. I've seen every movie they've scored, though it doesn't appear they did any more after "Miracle Mile". The VERY first DVD I ever bought was a Mind's Eye animation compilation called "Luminous Visions" which was older stuff set to music by Tangerine Dream, and includes an interview with Edgar and Jerome which was the first and only time I'd seen him speak on camera.

Wonder if the name will continue, as they've had countless member changes over the years but Edgar was the one constant and founder?

Re: Edgar Froese (of Tangerine Dream), dead at 70

Wow. This is shocking news to me.

I'm a pretty big fan of his work in Tangerine Dream, especially the '70s & '80s albums and the live recordings, and I even got into his solo work with his "Solo (1974-1983) The Virgin Years" compilation.

So what will happen to Tangerine Dream now?

First heard the many film scores, and then eventually, their albums from the 70's and 80's. Recently enjoyed the music he did for GTA V. It's available on the deluxe edition of the game soundtrack.

Dream on...

One of my favorite Tangerine Dream pieces of music is this one called "White Eagle"

(I love the way it builds up more and more as it goes on)

Tangerine Dream is one of my favorite bands so this is pretty disappointing news.

Re: Edgar Froese (of Tangerine Dream), dead at 70

Kinda bummed. I really liked Tangerine Dream, and had always hoped to see them live. The last tour a year or two ago didn't come anywhere near me, so I didn't make it.

Like someone else said, the body of work is massive, so there's still plenty of exploration left for me. A long time ago I got into the Tangerine Trees/Leaves project, which had recordings of live concerts. Hours upon hours upon hours of live tunes. I don't think it's been updated in years, though.

First track from their very first album- quite a shock if all you've heard before is their 80s stuff, but the album grows on you if you play it enough.

Re: Edgar Froese (of Tangerine Dream), dead at 70

This is sad news indeed. I have several albums by Tangerine Dream (Phaedra, Rubycon, Stratosfear, Encore), saw them in concert with my brother, sister, her husband at the time, and a buddy of ours back in about 1976 or so. It was a great concert, music enough to obliterate your senses (stoned out of our minds).

Edgar Froese will be missed...

Yeah, the Tangerine Tree & Tangerine Leaves live recordings are great, but that project is defunct as for any additional releases (the guy managing it all had to stop for personal reasons, aka his wife ). Still there were 92 TT and 91 TL releases (or 183 releases total), so quite a bit to listen to even without anymore coming out.

And post TT / TL, I still see some Tangerine Dream live recordings showing up online from time to time. But no organization to it, like TT / TL had to keep up with it all.
