The Game Awards 2014

So basically Geoff Keighley is trying to establish a better game awards show. We'll see if it's better then those Spike TV ones, but I imagine it will be far less cheesy.

http://thegameawards.com/

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/iya5ovk6t7w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Today I’m proud to announce The Game Awards 2014, a new show that will be coming on December 5. After spending over two decades working in games media, this year I’m creating a new independent celebration for our industry.

Starting out on a new path is never easy, but I’m deeply humbled to have the entire game industry rally behind this new celebration. In the coming days and weeks there will be much more to tell you about what’s planned for December 5 at the AXIS Theater in Las Vegas, including information on the awards, the world premieres and much more.

More than ever our industry — the fans, the developers and the media — need to unite and show the world the power of games. I look forward to celebrating with you on December 5, whether you join us in person in Las Vegas or online.

Thanks,
Geoff — @geoffkeighley

Dark Souls, Bayonetta and Hearthstone for GOTY? Well, this awards show is already a joke. Then again, Walking Dead was GOTY once upon a time...

Some of those categories are a joke. This should be entertaining to watch. Some of those games are too broke to nominate for anything.

Walking Dead Season 1 was my GOTY when it came out

And to be fair, those 3 games you mention are all rated pretty highly overall by critics. Dark Souls II and Bayonetta are both 91 overall, Hearthstone a 93 (although that one's certainly an oddball)

I've got no problem with Bayonetta, which looks awesome. But the other two are real head-scratchers.

Re: The Game Awards 2014

Was Dark Souls 2 that much of a drop in quality from the first one?
I am finishing up the first one and it is EASILY my favorite game of all-time. So if part 2 is anywhere near the same quality, then I would fully expect it to be in the running for GOTY.

The only reason to watch Game Show Awards is to see previews for upcoming games, IMO.

It's not as good as the first one, but then neither are most games. It does absolutely deserve to be in the running for this year's GOTY, though.

And Bayonetta 2 is going to be high, or at the top, of many lists this year.

I'm surprised Smash Bros Wii U didn't make it for GOTY, but reviews might have came out too late.

Reason to actually watch this thing

The new King's Quest title being developed by The Odd Gentlemen will be revealed during The Game Awards 2014, announced Geoff Keighley, the show's creator, on Twitter today.

The Odd Gentlemen's game is being published under the Sierra label, which parent company Activision brought back earlier this year. According to The Odd Gentlemen, the upcoming King's Quest game will be a reimagined take on the long-running series. It's being designed as a puzzle-focused adventure game, although not a traditional point-and-click title. Sierra announced in August that the King's Quest game is scheduled to be released in 2015; the publisher's first title, Lucid Games' Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, launched last week.

Keighley also announced that Sierra founders Roberta and Ken Williams will be honored as game industry pioneers during The Game Awards. Roberta Williams wrote and developed the original King's Quest, which debuted in 1983. You can check out a brief preview of the presentation in the video above.

This airs tonight. I might record it but doubt i'll tune in live, although most of the announcements and trailers will show up online anyway I imagine.

Re: The Game Awards 2014

Just got a chance to watch most of those trailers. Not really anything too cool in there. Zelda might be good though. I played the new demo for Until Dawn earlier today and it's pretty damn cool. More of an interactive movie than a game, but cool like Heavy Rain.

Honest question, why the crazy hype for No Mans Sky? I mean, visually it's nice. But that's literally it. There's no gameplay and we know nothing about it. The flying looks pretty bad, and all you do is walk/fly around randomly generated planets? I don't get it...what's the game?

The Randomly generated planets is what gets people hyped for it. Supposedly there are thousands upon thousands of different planets to explore and it would take a thousand years to finish. Crazy expectations.

Ok, I get that part and it does sound interesting. But what do you DO in the game? Is it like minecraft? Can I build? Is it an FPS? Are there enemies? Do you level you character up and collect stuff? I still fail to see a game here lol.

Well, in the demo you just die and it says Thanks for Playing. I'm assuming it would reload the checkpoint. I managed to guide almost-nude Hayden P. To safety...not even close to what I would do to her in real life
