The Newsroom (S3E01) -- Season Premiere -- "Boston" -- 11/9/14
In the wake of the Genoa debacle, Will (Jeff Daniels), Mac (Emily Mortimer) and the "News Night" team decide to err on the side of caution in reporting a major breaking story, which may enhance credibility, if not ratings. Neal (Dev Patel) faces a slippery slope when he's contacted by an anonymous source in possession of stolen government documents revealing how false press stories planted in newspapers spawned fatal riots in Kundu. Sloan (Olivia Munn) looks to solve a takeover puzzle; Maggie (Alison Pill) is forced to pinch-hit for Elliot (David Harbour) in the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings.
Written by Aaron Sorkin; directed by Anthony Hemingway.

Really solid 1st episode.
Was surprised that they tackled the Boston Marathon bombing. Someone here actually speculated they may take on that topic. But, I liked that the material wasn't redundant from what we've already seen and heard about the story. I liked seeing how ACN was so hesitant to go live right away after the story broke without confirming all their information. A lot of this episode showed how news is relayed through social media rather than official sources.
Maggie rocked in this episode. I've always found her mousy and annoying, but she kicked ass, especially in that live shot covering for Elliot. I'm glad they made her confidant and not go the cliched route and make her scared and nervous.
Looks like the hostile takeover will be a key element in the last 5 episodes.
Man, I wish Sorkin would have written at least 10 hours of material. 6 seems way too short. From everything I've heard about him and this final season, he really mailed it in and just wanted to be done with the show.

The files on that flash-drive - that's a fake (fake, as in made up for the show) news story concerning a fake country, right?

Yes that's fictional both story and country. The country name in that story was used before in an episode of The West Wing. Sorkin was just making a callback.

I assumed the leak would be Snowden, or a made up version of him. At first I was hoping the whole 6 episodes would revolve around the marathon but they covered that week real quick. It brought up a lot of feelings from that day and the days after it happened.

Very enjoyable season premiere. My only complaint -- it took Sloane way too long to put the pieces together.

Only six episodes this season?!? Jeez. IMO, this show deserved more than that, although I'm sure 6 is what Sorkin wanted. Too bad.
yeah. Damn.
When the creator and writer basically says he hates his own show, you're lucky to get 6.

Read this interview from the LA Times.
He doesn't really say that he hates his own show, but I think he's just over the stress and pressure of working on TV and the deadlines. I get the impression that he feels he doesn't want to be pressured to produce another season just because HBO says so. So he basically told HBO, he has one more story arc left and he wants it to be labeled as the last season for him to come back.
The story said he hired the dude who played Toby on The Office to help run his writer's room (essentially becoming the co-showrunner)
I think one of the reasons he's bailing on this show was the creative problems he had with season 2. If you recall, they shot the first 2 episodes and he thought they sucked and he had to basically start over from scratch. That cost money and time. I have a couple of friends who worked on season 2 and it literally took them from October/November 2012 to late May 2013 to film just 9 episodes. That's insane it took that long to shoot so few episodes.

He essentially hates the internet and you can tell it so much here. I wonder if that made him the perfect person or the worst person to write social network.

I'm curious, if say HBO really wants to continue on w out Sorkin, could they or would they have to get him to agree to it

It feels different watching this in November and with rain outside instead of July.
I thought maybe HBO wanted to pull the plug because of the ratings and not Sorkin but I guess I am wrong.
Hope the Blu-ray for season 2 drops below $30 some time soon.

If he actually does retire, it would suck. Ever since Sports Night, I don't think I ever get excited for a show or a movie more than if I know Sorkin wrote it. I don't care if it's self-indulgent, preachy, repetitive, too self conscious or what. If Sorkin wrote it, I'm definitely gonna watch. I actually convert all his shows into MP3s so I can listen to them and play the episodes in my head.
That said, I both loved and hated this premiere. Loved it because previous paragraph, and hated it because I know it's over after 5 more.
