What are some of the best games that were released with a new video game console?

For the purpose of this discussion, consider any video game released within three months of when a new video game system was first released as a "launch game".

My favorite launch games:

Wii Sports (Wii): may be controversial, but for some that was the only game they needed

Dreamcast still takes the cake (it helps that it launched a year later in the US):

Does a multi-plat qualify? The 1994 32X launch had a game called Doom, the first chance I had to play it, but that was nearly a year after its PC release.

If you think about it, Doom has been released on: DOS & Mac, Sega 32X, Atari Jaguar, SNES, PlayStation, 3DO, Windows, Sega Saturn, Game Boy Advance, Xbox 360, and the PS3. Crazy.

Yeah, Doom is the little game that could. It was also on the regular Xbox, if we're counting Ultimate Doom, tho oddly not on the PS2.

Sorry for the confusion. Any game that was released within three months of a system's release, regardless of the country. So game released in the launch window in Japan would count as a launch game. Also, multi-platform games qualify as well.

Those are all killer. I'm playing SSX 3 at the moment, and that game is still incredibly fun. I wouldn't be surprised to learn the first one holds up well. Shame that series has fallen off (along with all of EA Big's franchises).

It still amazes me that SMW came with the system. How times have changed.

And Halo, even if it isn't my favorite series, was a game changer like few games before or since.

While not a launch title, it made me take notice of the PS1. At the time I was still playing SNES games.







When I saw this at E3 I was instantly sold on the 3DS, while not a launch title I bought my 3DS when this game finally came out.

I remember the launch of Resident Evil well... I think it was like 6 months after the console came out, right after my return window or warranty or something for the PS was up, and I swear that's the game that "broke" my Playstation, forcing it to be played upside down for the remainder of it's life.

As we have the new gen consoles available it got me thinking of the games that are being released for them. Overall not particularly impressive i would say.

It seems that a lot of the first titles released on any new console are usually lacking, and i wondered what console release had the best selection of new games upon arrival?

Hard for me to vote against PS5 because of Demon's Souls. That, to me, is the best launch game ever.
I have fond memories of the original PS launch too, but mainly just for Ridge Racer.

Another multilaunch but Breath of the Wild on the Switch would be up there for me now, as would similar multiplatformer Demon's Souls.
