Gracepoint (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Episode 1" -- 10/2/14

EVERYONE IS A FRIEND, AND EVERYONE IS A SUSPECT ON THE RIVETING 10-PART MYSTERY EVENT SERIES PREMIERE OF "GRACEPOINT" THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2, ON FOX

A young boy, DANNY SOLANO (guest star Nikolas Filipovic), is found dead on an idyllic beach in the small seaside town of Gracepoint, spurring a major investigation lead by Detective EMMETT CARVER (David Tennant, "Broadchurch," "Dr. Who"), who has just arrived in Gracepoint to fill a high position in the town's police force. That job previously had been promised to Detective ELLIE MILLER (Emmy Award winner Anna Gunn, "Breaking Bad"), who, in light of the tragedy, must put any resentment aside and work the case with her prickly new boss. Danny's parents MARK (Michael Pena, "End of Watch") and BETH SOLANO (Virginia Kull, "Boardwalk Empire"), and his older sister, CHLOE (newcomer Madalyn Horcher) are devastated by the news, which carves a powerfully dark wake through the town as friends become suspects in the all-new "Episode 1" Series Premiere episode of GRACEPOINT airing Thursday, Oct. 2 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GPT-101) (TV-14 D, L, V)

I saw a review that said it was practically a shot for shot remake... I don't know. Looks alright... but I don't want to watch the same thing over again. I know they said they'd change a few things to make it more interesting...

It sure looks shot-for-shot in that preview. I'll probably tune in to hear Tennant's American accent, just for shits and giggles.

I think the first episode will be shot for shot simply because it set the whole story out in such a captivating way.

They have said that things were changed, including the ending so I'm interested to see how things go down.

Apparently the first two episodes follow pretty close to Broadchurch. After that, it changes. Like many American shows based off BBC shows, this seems pretty common.

I really enjoyed series 1 of Broadchurch so I'm down for this. I really hope they change the ending though...I'd like to be guessing throughout the limited series.

I really liked the original, so I hope this is a good re-make. Still, I wonder why they didn't just license the British version. It's not as if it was in a different language.

Anna Gunn seems miscast compared to the female detective in the original.

I would just recommend everyone go watch BROADCHURCH. No way they're going to top it, even with the same actor in the lead.

I'm guessing
Spoiler:
it will be the priest this time around

That resolution seems very "Hollywood" to me.

Not bragging, but I figured out the killer in the first episode of BROADCHURCH. Lucky guess? Perhaps. Didn't take away from my enjoyment and I wowed a few friends when the resolution came (because I had guessed the motive as well).

I remember figuring it out around episode 6, so when the series ended I felt a little let down I had already seen it coming.

Liked the long take during the opening sequence. Reminded me of The Player

Going from Olivia Coleman to Anna Gunn is like going from Peyton Manning to Christian Ponder.

No thanks.

Gunn is fine especially in a morose state but Colman is one of today's best actresses. Few could top her.

I thought Gunn did a decent job. Liked Michael Peña a lot. Tennant seemed to be acting around that American accent but maybe I was just distracted by it. Couldn't he have been on loan/exile from Scotland Yard or something? Gracepoint's innkeepers can come from the UK, why not a detective?

Re: Gracepoint (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Episode 1" -- 10/2/14

I enjoyed it. Beautifully shot. Never saw Broadchurch, but I fully intend to watch it at some point. So, I don't have the frame of reference or comparisons most of you have.

I liked Anna Gunn in this. Miller is a big departure from who she played on Breaking Bad. Tennant was fine as the lead detective. In a way, this reminded me of The Killing season 1, just without all the grief porn. I think they handled that well here.

BTW, is there some FCC regulation where you can't show close ups of dead children on OTA TV? I noticed that all the shots of dead Danny were from far away. Both on the beach and in the morgue.

And WTF is up with Miller's kid deleting all the texts and then deleting material from the hard drive?

Good start to this limited series. I saw the ratings weren't great, which was expected considering the competition. So, I fully expect this to be a one and done series.

Well, it's a contained story so it by it's very nature it's a one and done (though they are supposedly doing a second season in the UK).

I'm recording this, but since I watched Broadchurch I don't know if I'll ever get around to watching it. It wasn't like I was overwhelmed by the original. I like Jodie Whittaker so that was an in point for me.

I'm another person who hasn't seen Broadchurch. I was also thinking about The Killing season 1 when I was watching this. Overall, I liked this and I will watching the remaining episodes.

I'm in this boat. Never saw Broadchurch. Had planned on it but when they announced this show I decided to wait. I also have never watched Breaking Bad so my knowledge of Anna Gunn is limited.

I like this so far. I'll keep watching.

BTW I was ok with David's accent but his hair was throwing me off a bit.

Re: Gracepoint (S1E01) -- Series Premiere -- "Episode 1" -- 10/2/14

I found the first episode to be pointless. Not only was it pretty much word-for-word the same script as BROADCHURCH's first episode, but many of the shots were identical. Heck, even the sets are eerily similar to the original series.

I know this is a remake, but a little originality would be welcome.

How much weight has Anna Gunn lost in the 1-2 years since she last filmed "Breaking Bad"?

I liked it. I tried watching Broadchurch but didn't finish it for some reason. This bombed as almost everything is for FOX this season saved Gotham but I hope it will finish out the season.

This ep is on my tivo, but it may not get a chance to air all 10 episodes, as it did not reach a 1 rating (18-49 category). The fist ep was okay, but nothing special so I will not weep if it is cancelled.

It's basically a ten episode miniseries; i can't imagine they would pull it from the schedule. Might dump it off to Saturday and run back-to-back episodes to burn it off, or something, though.
