Do you back up any part of your collection?
I like to back up stuff on a HDD so the kids and watch stuff without scuffing my collection. They stream from HD to laptop to the tv
Since DVD Fab was shut down I cannot find a good program to do this. I like to do a 1:1 ISO file
Anyone have a suggestion?

I don't bother anymore. It's largely a waste of hard drive space.
These days I only extract the entire undecrypted iso from every new bluray disc I buy, largely to check for any bad sectors due to manufacturing defects.

Back in the old days I used to copy DVD's. I ended up with 1000's of unwatched DVD-r's. Don't bother any more.

I'll never waste another minute or a penny on backing anything up. I used to be OCD about it, but finally realized that it's a huge waste. If I lose something, and really need it again (and if it's a material possession I dont) I'll find it somewhere.

(With all that being said).
Previously, I backed up particular tv season sets if one or more of the discs have major playback problems.
For example, Universal, Warner, and Fox shows which were released on double-sided flipper discs, such as: Magnum PI, The A-Team, Knight Rider, Dallas, Dukes of Hazzard, Quantum Leap, Miami Vice, Airwolf, Remington Steele, etc ...
This is the only way to watch these particular flipper season sets without any problems like: freezing, skipping, pixelation, etc ...
This is done more for pragmatic reasons, than anything "ocd" related.

Re: Do you back up any part of your collection?
In the end, I found it was easier (and less expensive) to just buy the re-released single-sided discs versions of Magnum PI, The A-Team, Knight Rider, the original Battlestar Galactica, Miami Vice, etc ... than dealing with the headaches of backing up double-sided flipper discs.
I'll pick up the upcoming Quantum Leap complete series set which appears to be all single-sided discs (judging by the disc count), once it hits $50 or less. (The R1 seasons 2 to 5 of Quantum Leap were originally done as double-sided flipper discs). Sliders is also being released as a complete series set, where it appears season 3 is now single-sided discs. (The original version of season 3 of Sliders was done as double-sided flipper discs, while the original season 1+2 set had lousy foam packaging which scratched/mangled the discs).

Don't tell me it is illegal to do what I do. I mean back something up for the kids so they do not ruin the original, that has to be ok to do right?
Anyways so no one knows of a decent program to use?

These days I find it's easier to just buy another copy from the $5-$10 dump bins, when my previous copy either gets lost or goes bad (ie. developing new bad sectors from rot, etc ...).

Once in awhile when I'm bored, I'll pick out some random blurays (or dvds) from my collection, and check them again on the computer for bad sectors.
(I'm not really sure why exactly I do this).

DVD FAB is ok but when I make a backup of BD's for the kids room, it always says I need to update.
Due to them being in trouble, they cannot update the protection breaking I think.
I bought X-Men DOTP 2 days ago, want to keep it nice so I went to back it up but no luck, the most recent DVD FAB says "You need to update"........so that is why I asked if anyone knew of a FAB alternative to create .ISO files

Whether you like it or not, it is in fact illegal to break copy protection — a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act — and asking for help here to do it will get your thread locked.

"Days of Future Past" comes with a Digital Copy, as most BDs do these days. There's your "backup" for the kids.

In response to the OP's question - No, I don't see a point. I have some 1160 blu's alone and have never felt compelled or think they'd no longer be playable to the point I felt the need to back them up. I pull out random titles, dating back to 2007 and haven't had one single issue yet. In fact, I watched The Descent recently which I believe was the first or second title I bought on blu, and it played just fine.
So, it's not worth it to me.

Discussion of ripping discs is verboten at DVD Talk. Sorry.
