Are speaker grills nessasary to cover cones or is it alright to take them off? My cats are tearing up the cloth of my RS5s and I was wondering if I could place the grills on front of the cloth. I think they look cooler with them off anyway but heard dust causes damage to cones.

Your grilles aren't necessary at all. They do keep dust off the cones, but you could also clean them off by dusting them LIGHTLY with a standard dusting wand. Take special care, however not to damage the tweeter, as it is the most susceptible to damage during handling.
You could also use a can of compressed "air" from the computer store to clean off your cones periodically.

I own the Reference Series..and they look awesome without the grilles..although with the grilles they still look attractive.
They're all gold aluminum cones..but look gorgeous near the equipment.
Perhaps being aluminum..the cones don't have too much of a problem with dust?

Hmmmm..... Just think about what those speaker cones could look like once those cats start clawing on them!

Try getting some kind of really strong lemon/lime scented air freshener spray. Then, take the grills off, spray the grills, then put them back on the speakers. Cats hate strong citric smells, so keep repeating the process each time the smell wears off until you run out of the can. By then, the cats will probably know not to hang out there (or at least stay away for a while).

While speaker grills are not necessary, they do effect the sound. Most grills do tend to slightly mute the treble from a speaker as the sound is pushed through the fabric. You may find that you like the sound better with them on (that is the way they were engineered) or you may find that you like the slight treble enhancement.
