I recall 2 books from childhood but not their titles. Are these recognizable to anyone? My google attempts have failed me.

Book1:
about girl in adult apocalypse who dons her Girl Scout uniform to lead group of starving neighborhood kids to build a new community and defend against other factions


Book2:
Budda allegory young adult fiction boy goes on miserable journey then starves to death as circus freak achieving enlightenment. People trow food at him in a cage, but he eventually stops picking it up and dies of starvation. This one may also involve a journey to find his dead parents?
