Richard Attenborough has died

British actor and film director Richard Attenborough has died at the age of 90.

He died at lunchtime on Sunday, his son told BBC News.

Lord Attenborough was one of Britain's leading actors, before becoming a highly successful director.

In a career that spanned six decades, he appeared in films including Brighton Rock, World War Two prisoner of war thriller The Great Escape and later in dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic Park.

As a director he was perhaps best known for Gandhi, which won two Oscars.

Lord Attenborough had been in a nursing home with his wife for a number of years, BBC arts editor Will Gompertz said.

He had also been in a wheelchair since falling down stairs 6 years ago, our correspondent added.

His family is expected to make a full statement tomorrow.

Re: Richard Attenborough has died

I knew he was in declining health for some time. Although he lived a good long life, I am saddened by his passing.

Loved him in "Jurassic Park." He didn't direct many movies, but I enjoyed most of them...yes, even "A Chorus Line." Now I have to go tell my wife that Santa has died.

Really loved his performance in the original Brighton Rock, one of the great British noirs. Would love to see it get a Blu-Ray release.

I'll always know him best for Great Escape. Seeing him get pissed off at Danny (Bronson) during the escape just never gets old to me.

Re: Richard Attenborough has died

He was a hell of a narrator and a pretty good actor. Never cared for his films as a director, but Chaplin was alright I suppose.
Anyway, to be a little heavy and live to 90 is pretty uncommon and not too shabby. RIP, Sir Richard.

Re: Richard Attenborough has died

Am I missing something? What did he narrate? Are people confusing him for his brother David Attenborough? He is the narrator on the Discovery specials.

Re: Richard Attenborough has died

90 years old is a pretty good run and I can't say I'm surprised by his death but for some reason I thought he was still healthy and working as recently as a year or two ago. I'm a little surprised to read he'd been in a wheelchair for 6 years and was living in a nursing home.

I first saw him in Jurassic Park but as I got older and started watching older films I was always delighted when he popped up in a movie I was watching.

RIP Dr. Hammond

Shocked by the news of his passing.

Spoiler:
...only because I thought he passed away several years ago.

Re: Richard Attenborough has died

In addition to The Great Escape, he was also quite good in The Sand Pebbles (alongside McQueen as well).

Re: Richard Attenborough has died

Sad news.

Though when I saw the last name "Attenborough" next to "has died", my mind instantly thought of his brother David (who I'm such a huge fan of that I would outright weep over if I ever hear that he has died).

Re: Richard Attenborough has died

As a director, Richard Attenborough frequently directed in an epic "David Lean" style that really needed to be seen on a large screen.
