Mr. Holmes (2015) (D: Condon, S: McKellen, Linney, Sanada)
(IMDb page)
An aged, retired Sherlock Holmes looks back on his life, and grapples with an unsolved case involving a beautiful woman.
McKellen is reuniting with Gods and Monsters director Bill Condon, who also did Kinsey, Dreamgirls, and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, because I guess he had a mortgage to pay or something. Linney also appeared in Kinsey and recently in Condon's The Fifth Estate, starring Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch.
I haven't read A Slight Trick of the Mind, although I've had a copy sitting on my shelf for a while. (When the zombies attack, I'll be able to build a small defensive wall out of all the unread Sherlock Holmes pastiche novels I've got sitting around.) A year before it was published, there was another novel about an elderly and retired Holmes, roughly 90 years old, set in the 1940s: Michael Chabon's The Final Solution. I've read that one, and I had been hoping that it would get turned into a movie starting Christopher Lee. A similar story with Ian McKellen doesn't sound like a bad settlement.

I'm a sucker for Holmes, and seeing McKellan play the character makes this an automatic watch for me. Looking forward to this one.

McKellan playing Holmes? I'm in.
Incidentally, check out The Seven Percent Solution. Wonderful movie, and terrific Holmes pastiche. Easy to see why Meyer prospered. Fantastic stuff. The movie, I mean. Haven't read the book yet, because I'm a horrible excuse for an English lit major with ADHD who reads very slowly.

Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) wrote a script a while back and every few months there's an article with one of the actors or producers being quoted saying that it'll happen when everyone's schedules line up.

This looks so good. I forgot that Hiroyuki Sanada was also a part of the cast.

Saw this last night. It's a good film. I enjoyed the cast and the way they were utilized. The story has interesting mysteries to it. McKellen is just so awesome at being this Holmes. Such a delight to see him do a role like this.
It's funny, I only know McKellen as an old man. Since X, I've been a fan of him in movies. Kind of wish I could see what the hell young McKellen did but I never cared to see his youth's work.
I knew I was going to love this pretty much when the music started. It all has a quality to it that pulls you in. The details, the cast, etc. It's just a good flick that attracts you into following that world.

I wouldn't call it slow. But it's a moderate paced film. It flows well. Holmes' motivation keeps you going for sure.

Saw this last night. I thought it was slow. Excellent performances but would have liked to see more depth and suspense regarding the case. Too much focus on his old age. As someone who is watching his mother disintegrate with dementia, its not great entertainment.
