I can't be the ONLY person who friggin' HATES Mel Brooks' movies

I really fucking hate them. All of them. Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, the whole fucking lot.

I can't stand that "Say joke, mug for the camera, say joke, mug for the camera" type of humor.

I can't be the only one, right?

Re: I can't be the ONLY person who friggin' HATES Mel Brooks' movies

I'm of two opinions:

* Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are two of the funniest movies ever made, to me, and it's unbelievable he put out two absolute classics in such a short time frame.

* I find most of his subsequent work, especially Spaceballs, to be so lacking in humor that they're unwatchable.

I don't care for Mel Brooks much but Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein are solid.

I don't like anything else from.

I think that The Producers is one of the funniest films of all time, but what do I know.

People who don't like Young Frankenstein shouldn't be allowed to watch movies.

Young Frankenstein is great, and I still have soft spots for Spaceballs and Robin Hood: Men in Tights for mainly nostalgic reasons. Dracula has a few funny moments, mostly from Peter MacNicol.

Re: I can't be the ONLY person who friggin' HATES Mel Brooks' movies

I always considered myself a Mel Brooks fan, but now that I think about it, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are the only ones I really love. I like Spaceballs, but it is not the awesome movie everyone makes it out to be. Robin Hood Men In Tights I couldn't stand. I remember enjoying Life Stinks when it came out on VHS, but it was pretty forgettable.

I watched both Spaceballs and Robin Hood recently. I felt Spaceballs was just as hilarious as I remember. Robin Hood not so much.

I like young frankenstein because of gene wilder and gene hackman. Those are two great performances.

His "jokes" in all his other movies are pretty damn lame. Can't stand them.

Like some others, I really think Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are far above the others.

Re: I can't be the ONLY person who friggin' HATES Mel Brooks' movies

Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles are the only Mel Brooks movies I own. They're solid gold comedies. (I once owned The Producers, but I'm no hurry to re-buy it.)

Robin Hood: Men in Tights is one of the most unfunny, moronic, excruciating "comedies" I've ever had the misfortune to witness. And Dracula: Dead and Loving It was one of the most forgettable.

While Spaceballs wasn't as bad as those two, the humor in it is pretty dumb. "Comb the desert!" Cut to: soldiers with giant combs "combing" the desert. Her her. (Mel was trying to be like team ZAZ and failing miserably)

Mel peaked in the 70s.

Re: I can't be the ONLY person who friggin' HATES Mel Brooks' movies

My take is that in order to make a really funny parody of a subject, the filmmakers have to both know and love the thing they're parodying: Spinal Tap being a prime example.

I think that Mel and crew knew and loved 30's Universal Horror films and Hollywood westerns---I did not believe they knew and loved Star Wars.

Come on! That was fucking awesome! Also, "they're jamming the radar!" Darth Helmet tastes it "No one gives me the raspberry."

20 posts and no love for History of the World: Part 1? Good stuff.

Loved Robin Hood when it came out. Tried to watch it recently... what a terrible movie. <- this emoticon is funnier than that entire movie.

Spaceballs hasn't aged well either. Some of the gags and dialog are just classic and hold up fine, but the film as a whole is pretty bad.

Re: I can't be the ONLY person who friggin' HATES Mel Brooks' movies

I love Young Frankenstein. By far, it's my favorite Mel Brooks movie and up there with some of my favorite comedies. Blazing Saddles and The Producers also rank pretty high. The others ... well, most of them have their moments, but I can understand where they wouldn't be someone's cup of tea. His humor can be very hit and miss. When it hits, like Young Frankenstein, it's hilarious, but when it misses, it can be painful.

I'm too busy hating Woody Allen to spend time and energy also hating Mel Brooks. But I have to admit I haven't seen any of Brooks' movies since HIGH ANXIETY (1977). That's probably why I don't hate Mel Brooks. I didn't see the bad ones. And I have seen numerous Woody movies since 1977, including the very last one I saw, MATCH POINT (2005), so at least I have a reason to hate Woody.

You can't seriously be comparing Blazing Saddles to Spaceballs?!?! It's like they were made from two different filmmakers... one at the top of his game, and one out of desperation.

Re: I can't be the ONLY person who friggin' HATES Mel Brooks' movies

Young Frankenstein is one of my all-time favorites. Oddly I've missed a number of other Brooks films like Spaceballs and History of the World.

It's less known, but I have a soft spot for The Twelve Chairs. Zany humor but an interesting story as well.
