Weekend Box Office 8/1-8/3: I Am Groot edition
UPDATED, Friday, 1:33 PM: Matinee showings of James Gunn’s The Guardians Of The Galaxy is hot as can be and after those record late night numbers we are now looking at a picture that could play past $90M — if this strength holds up, which we believe it will. It plays to families, with kids so Saturday and Sunday moviegoing should be strong and tonight’s CinemaScore is also expected to be high. It’s taking all the air out of the box office right now. And checking in with Fandango, they said today is their biggest ticketing day of the summer. So Guardian tickets are selling like hot cakes. Of the more than 1,000 ticket buyers, 55% plan to see the movie more than once and 63% plan to bring in their kids to see the film. It’s outselling the first Thor and Captain America and even the first Iron Man in the same point of their sales cycle so Marvel has itself the start of another original film franchise.

So which one of you schmucks was proposing this would bomb?
Finke is already stating the projections are tagged for a $98M weekend. I really hope this becomes the first non-Iron Man Marvel film to cross the $100M mark in its opening weekend. I think it can do it, especially with how the WOM has been. I've already seen it twice in the past 24 hours and am going again tomorrow night with friends who haven't seen it yet.

Awesome numbers. This is simply a reward for Marvel for doing something quirky yet doing it the right way. Getting the right people attached to the project and making a good movie.

Lots of skeptics with Guardians when it was first announced, Edgar Wright fans/Bloggers are up in arms, but the General Public could not care less.

I think this year was a turning point at least in my estimation of Marvel Studios... both of this yr's releases being amongst the best of them all. While they are a made-by-committee type of film, in their defense you've still been able to see a director's style come through at the same time. I still think the credits scenes are a gimmick, but they've made it their own... it works, kinda fun. I still don't think the general public is aware of the difference between 'Marvel Studios' and a Marvel film made by another studio... but I'm sure they'll continue trying to separate themselves.

If the man who came from Troma gets a second gig before his first attempt came out, Wright did something wrong.

Based upon the fact that Marvel re-hired Gunn for the sequel for GOTG makes me feel Wright was either not doing the job Marvel hired him to do or was not getting along with top brass.

GoG was always conceived as a cosmic entry into the MCU. Ant-Man was not.

5th UPDATE: Saturday, 6:58 AM: All in a day’s work — Saving the universe and saving the day — James Gunn’s fun superhero actioner Guardians of the Galaxy launched with a $37.95M Friday (which includes those $11.2M Thursday late nights) for Disney/Marvel helping to breathe life into the box office after a seven-week slump. Depending on family moviegoing today, the movie could play anywhere right now from $92.5M to $95.5M, which means it could end up higher than the opening of Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier ($95M). If it drops 15% on Saturday, we’re looking at the higher end of the estimate.

Looks like it may just miss $100MM.
