Stanley Kubrick Masterpiece Collection - Amazon Exclusive - 11/04/2014

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Currently at $139.99.

8 films - Lolita (1962), Dr. Strangelove (1964), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), A Clockwork Orange (1971), Barry Lyndon (1975), The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1987) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999).

10 discs. 2 previously-released documentaries (in a boxset that included one more movie and is $250 or so) and 3 new documentaries.

I'm in! I've only seen The Shining and FMJ, so that's 6 new movies for me (and The Shining was so long ago I could rewatch it and I have seen FMJ several times, love that movie).

I have the box set from a few years back which also had Spartacus so I see no need to upgrade this. Nice looking set though.

Maybe they'll be new, superior encodes from 4k transfers? If not, there is not any reason to upgrade.

WB so it is most likely the same discs in a shiny new box with a new bonus disc. The same discs that default to DD 5.1 and can be found individually for $7.99 online and in store in the cheap bins.

Looks nice, but I'll pass. I bought this...

...when it was on sale at Best Buy for a whopping ten bucks. Currently selling on Amazon for over $25. I may add Dr. Strangelove to my collection some day, but I'm not currently dying for more Kubrick.

I still think the UK box was the best buy. Missing Strangelove, but when I bought it, it was on for £15. Looks like it still drops below £20, now and then.

Agreed - handsome set. I'll likely pass though since I already have these. Not a bad option for those who don't though.

Yeah, really cool looking set. But unless there are all new transfers it really isn't worth that price.

Those are the 3 movies that you really need from that Amazon collection though I have Full Metal Jacket.

Re: Stanley Kubrick Masterpiece Collection - Amazon Exclusive - 11/04/2014

Ah, I was sure WB would release another Kubrick set and am surprised it took so long. I see they included disk #2 from the Clockwork Orange digibook and apparently dropped the all-cardboard packaging from the first BD set (the disk storage part looks like digipaks). I'm in, as I don't own anything Kubrick...but (as usual) will wait a bit for the price to drop.

Aside from the actual Clockwork Orange book, I assume there are no missing extras for these films?

The set looks beautiful, but I already own all of those films, though not the Clockwork Orange re-release. Even still, I'm such a big Kubrick fan that if this set gets down dirt cheap, I might bite just for the book, A Life in Pictures in HD and the new documentaries.

If they are repressing the same discs for on the last box set, A Life In Pictures won't he in HD.

That disc has always been configured to be ACO disc 2 and also a box set bonus disc. It was included in the last Kubrick box and it's no surprise it'll be included here. The bonus disc in this new box would be easily repurposed for a 3-disc ACO re-release too. The 45th anniversary is a little over a year away and Warner will need something old to repackage instead of releasing the restored version on Blu.

Actually, yes. There is a Full Metal Jacket digibook that included the Stanley Kubrick's Boxes doc which doesn't seem to be included here. So you still need to double up on FMJ.

So is the only difference in this set and buying the individual ones the two bonus discs?

Like every other Warner's repackage. Last one I believe was the Ocean's trilogy that added in 1 bonus disc, but the movies themselves are the same as what was previously released.

It's one new bonus disc that includes three new docs. The other extras disc is the one from the last box and the ACO 2-disc.

As someone who has all the individual Kubrick releases this is what is meant to entice me:

Disc 10 – Kubrick Remembered / Stanley Kubrick in Focus / Once Upon a Time … A Clockwork Orange

· Kubrick Remembered – NEW
A new look into the Kubrick archives, with special appearances by Christiane Kubrick. Featuring never-seen footage of Stanley’s works, his house and his film production facilities.

· Stanley Kubrick in Focus – NEW to Blu-ray
Spielberg, Soderbergh, Stone, Friedkin, Scorsese and others tell how Kubrick’s directorial style influenced them and how his unique style was developed.

· Once Upon a Time … A Clockwork Orange – NEW to the U.S.
Co-written by critic Michel Ciment and featuring interviews with a psychologist and a sociologist, Once Upon a Time … ‘A Clockwork Orange’ is a wonderfully unusual cine-documentary that focuses more on the titular movie’s historical context and philosophy than on its production and reception. The documentary benefits from archival audio commentary by the late Stanley Kubrick, who offers his rationale for making the controversial, devilishly prescient proto-punk cult classic: “Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven.”

So if you don't have the first boxset and just collect the individual releases, it would be the two new discs that you can't get on their own.

Re: Stanley Kubrick Masterpiece Collection - Amazon Exclusive - 11/04/2014

There's only one new disc.

The disc with Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures and O Lucky Malcolm was in the last box and the 2-disc ACO.

"So if you don't have the first boxset" the only difference between this and the individual releases are the two bonus discs?

You're having a real hard time with this.

I don't have the first box set. I have all individual releases including the 2-disc ACO. I have everything but Disc 10.

Huh, so you can get all 8 movies for about $10 each and after $80 vs. $140 all you end with is one disc, the booklet, and the pretty box?

Uhm, I added all 8 to the cart and it comes out to $129.35. They're not as cheap as people made them them out to be Keeping the pre-order for now and see what happens.
