The Leftovers (S1E05) -- "Gladys" -- 7/27/14

Laurie's resolve is put to the test in the wake of a brutal hate crime. After his latest initiatives to maintain the peace in Mapleton fall short, Kevin turns down an outside offer to rid the town of its problems. Matt brings his pulpit to the street. Meg takes on a new role.

Written by Damon Lindelof & Tom Perrotta; directed by Mimi Leder.

Well that was brutal. And just when they started to make me feel a tiny bit of sympathy for the KKK, they went and made me despise them even more.

It seems like that's all this show is about...trying to make that group as annoying as possible, with no real reason behind it. Classic Lindelof.

That stoning scene was hard to watch!

I liked this episode, since it gave us a little more of a look into the GR. I'm still not quite sure what that scene between the leader and the cop's wife over breakfast was all about.

The FBI guy's offer to get rid of the GR problem for him seemed a little over-the-top. Also, from his reaction it sounds like there are several similar types of cults out there.

Yeah, I've watched Game of Thrones, True Blood, etc... but I have to be honest and say that stoning scene was one of the toughest scenes ever for me to stomach. I think it was the realness of it. Just horrific. I actually felt bad for poor Gladys.

I felt differently...I sat there thinking, are you really trying to get us to have sympathy for this group after all the BS they've done to people on this show?

Furthermore, if the Guilty Remnant truly believes that life is meaningless, why were they so upset about losing a member? Seems to be opposed to what they teach.

Good news, though. With Liv Tyler finally 'ready' to join the group, we don't have to listen to her talk anymore.

Once again, Chris Eccleston was the best part of this episode.

Also that they added Cults to the ATF (now ATFEC)

I haven't watched this, or the previous episode, trying to follow the threads only.

But, just thinking out loud, after the "event", creating a cult would be a really great business. I know most will say that it is right now, in the real world. Almost anyone could say, I have the key, you can still be saved and join your loved ones.

I really don't get that... Why are they actively recruiting members? Why do have all of these rules they adhere to? If they really think life has no meaning, wouldn't they be closer to anarchists or nihilists who would have no rules?

And what is the appeal of becoming one of these assholes? I don't get why Liv Tyler would suddenly want to be a part of this lunacy.

The way I would describe the show is, imagine Lost at the height of its unapologetic ambiguity, but with much less interesting and likable characters.

Stopped watching after ep 4. I'll watch again after the season is finished only if it gets renewed for a season 2. The casting is just bad in this. None of these characters are really likeable.

Re: The Leftovers (S1E05) -- "Gladys" -- 7/27/14

This show is starting to hit the right spot for me. It's extremely depressing and bleak and the characters seem pretty natural to me. It's like the opposite of Lost. I thought they'd keep teasing us with mysteries but it's really focusing on the human drama. With all that said, I'm not sure how long they can sustain this show. My guess is that it won't even get a second season.

1.6M viewers and 0.8 in the demos from Sunday. Ratings have stabilized and gone up a little. With on demand, HBO Go and re-airs included, I think this show has a shot for another season. Even though it's loathed by some people, it seems to be finding a stable audience.

If you think anarchists and nihilists have no rules, you are mistaken.

HBO does care about street cred with audiences more than other networks. If they don't think it's a beloved show by its audience (an indicator of weak support), they will kill it. It's already generated more negative buzz than just about any HBO program in recent memory.

I'm still trying to figure out the point to her character in the first place.

She's an exposition plot device for a bunch of non-speaking non-characters that viewers non-care about.

One thing I noticed is that things keep disappearing on this show, but with simple answers... Except for the humans.

I actually thought it was a decent episode. I wasn't getting bored or restless at all during the episode, unlike portions of all the other episodes.

Praise the Lord. She's such a shitty actor, with that deer-in-the-headlights/confused/retarded look and that soft-spoken brain-dead voice. They couldn't have stoned her instead?

Re: The Leftovers (S1E05) -- "Gladys" -- 7/27/14

I'm still intrigued by the show and I have gotten this far, so I am going to finish up the season and see how it all plays out.

I do have to say that they are wasting Amy Brenneman's acting talents. She LITERALLY has not said a word this season, so why even bother to hire an actress with a good resume? I can see her agent pitching this role to her, "OK, I have this great role for you, but you never say a word!"

Re: The Leftovers (S1E05) -- "Gladys" -- 7/27/14

An actor would probably see not being able to talk for a role as an added challenge. Holly hunter won an Oscar without talking.

If anything, a bad actor in a non-talking role would be worse.
