Reminder: Matt Reeves filmed this movie in 3D and it also has a Dolby Atmos sound mix for available theaters.

Oh, shit. I'll go 3D now.
Any word on the quality of it? Reeves filmmaking seems like it'd work with the format.

I never go to the movies and I haven't seen neither the original or the sequel and I know that's Captain America: The Winter Soldier
The best movies of the year so far according to people: CATWS, DOFP, and DOTPOTA.
I have my movie cash ready from the Legacy boxset. This weekend or next weekend. Can't wait!

Just got back from this and it was very cool. No complaints on my part. Gary Oldman, for all of the accolades he's been getting, is not in the film a whole lot. He was good, though.

Checked out "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" last night at a RPX / Atmos theater in 3D, and it was a fine presentation, and it didn't seem dimly lit, rather natural looking (some 3D fillms suffer from it in how the movie was filmed and lit). But you don't need the 3D to get much more visually out of the viewing experience. The Atmos audio system added a bit more to the aural ambience. Still not sure if it's worth the $5 upcharge, but my friends wanted to see it in RPX, so I went with it.
The film does a good job setting up the Apes food chain and players (as well as a handful of the human cast), while delving into bits of characterizations and motivations for their actions later to drive the plot. The CGI for the apes has pretty much seamless integration with the human actors on the screen, you simply accept all the ape characters as if they really existed while on the screen, Andy Serkis as Caesar anchors the film with leadership tempered by family concerns (both immediate and for all ape-dom) and forethought. The human characters suffer a little bit in their characterizations (but the film would have been 30 minutes longer, and it was already a wee bit long at 130 minutes).
Anyhow definitely check it out if you like the "Planet of the Apes" franchise, and even if you don't, it's still takes its time for the develop apes and the interpersonal relationships to incorporate character dynamics that makes for an entertaining film.
I will say, there are some scenes in the final act that rivaled the grimace I felt for the stunt men in "The Raid 2", and started feeling bad for the stunt-apes until I laughed and realized there were no stunt-apes in the making of the movie. LOL!
I gives it 3 stars, or a grade of B.

What an utterly captivating and thrilling piece of cinema. Mostly apes, most of the time and they are so enthralling you have no idea they are not real.
Reeves captured emotions, tenderness, viciousness and the like with ease.
Jason Clarke was a standout, but Andy Serkis just owns the movie as Caeser. Just entrancing.
Thoroughly entertained and thoroughly enjoyable. This was your smart summer popcorn movie.
Really very well done!

Mini-review of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Amazing film. Does an outstanding job of building on the foundation of the first (Rise), and betters it. The two main ape leads, Caesar and Koba, are impressive, that you forget after the first minute that they are special effects. The conflicts shown on this film are just a prelude to what is to come, and I was ready to see the next film as soon as the credits rolled. Could be the best Hollywood movie I have seen this year (outside of Dragon 2 and Winter Soldier).

Having never seen an Apes film, does one need to see at least Rise of the Planet of the Apes to know what's going on in this one?

Nope, they're all the same, apes vs. humans to see which species survives.

Not really, though Rise was really entertaining as well.

I enjoyed this. I don't think it was quite on par with the 1st one, but it was still good in a different way. This is a much more action-oriented flick where as the other one was more of a drama. The acting was top notch from Clarke and Serkis as Caesar. I don't even know why Kerri Russell was even in the movie, as she provides next to nothing.
If you've ever wanted to see something crazy in a movie, see this, because (mild spoiler)
