Re: 22 Jump Street (Lord & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Saw this tonight.

Pretty solid sequel. I laughed alot. Hill and Tatum were hilarious. I also loved that they gave Ice Cube alot more to do in this movie. His comedy timing and how his character absolutely despised Jenko and Schmidt was awesome.

I do think the 110 minute running time was a little bloated. The movie started out fantastic, lost a little steam in the middle, especially when they tried to create some tension with Jenko and Schmidt, but then it picked up and finished pretty strong. Although the ending was pretty by the numbers and predictable. Also, when Jenko got really caught up with football and his bromance with that QB kinda dragged the movie. I think this would have been better served with a little extra editing and maybe around a 95 to 100 minute running time.

As I said, Ice Cube cracked me up. I loved it when:

Spoiler:
He lost his shit during lunch when his character found out that Schmidt was banging his daughter. The Queen Latifah cameo as his wife was great, especially the straight outta Compton line.

Definitely see this if you're a fan of the 1st movie. I give a B and 4 out of 5 stars.

The end credits:

Spoiler:
Gag with the future Jump Street sequels was also pretty cool.

Re: 22 Jump Street (Lord & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

I liked it a lot, but I felt like a Jump Street officer at the screening last night, as other than me and my friend, almost everyone else appeared to be teenagers. I think we were the only ones who recognized Richard Greico at the end.

Also, I expect this did big business last night. We arrived at 10:00 for a 10:15 screening, and it was sold out, but they had already added an unadvertised 10:30 screening, which we attended, and which also sold out. I've been to a lot of Thursday night screenings this year, pretty much all the big films, and this is the only sold out show I've been to (let alone the fact that they were able to sell out two shows 15 minutes apart).

Re: 22 Jump Street (Lord & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

In the inevitable followup, both Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill return as undercover cops who are just a little too old to be posing as college students while trying to find out who's the drug dealer on campus.

Once again, a lot of meta-references to it being a sequel, some funny, some just groan-worthy. It takes a little while to find its groove, but there are a couple of big laughs, and some weird fight scenes at the end. But I got the feeling they were making the story up as they went along.

So, not really the greatest sequel, just competent. Stay after for the immediate end credits for some more fun with upcoming Jump Street sequel ideas.

I give it 2.5 stars or a grade of C+.

Re: 22 Jump Street (Lord & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Here's my take:

The broad strokes of the story are virtually identical this second time around, which is all part and parcel of the running joke that screenwriters Michael Bacall, Oren Uziel and Rodney Rothman have built the sequel (and its charm) on. But that doesn't mean that they haven't put a fresh coat of paint on the familiar routine to keep things interesting.

As seems to be the trend with comedies these days, there's a token amount of bromance added to the mix. Here, it's injected via a budding friendship between Jenko and a college athlete nicknamed Zook (Wyatt Russell) that throws a football-sized wrench into the increasingly fragile Schmidt-Jenko dynamic (a full-fledged bromance in its own right that's explored in comic detail throughout the course of the story).

But in general, the story replicates the feel of the original — including another instance where the pair trip out on the very drug they're investigating, this time while they're trying to surveil some potential suspects — with equally hilarious results, proving that the chemistry between Hill and Tatum has yet to fizzle.
3.5 out of 5. My full review can be found here.

Re: 22 Jump Street (Lord & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

My wife and I caught the first showing this morning. I liked it, but didn't love it. It really started to drag for a bit. They definitely could have cut it a bit shorter to tighten things up. Aside from all of the sequel-related jokes, most of the really funny stuff was in the red-band trailer. All that said, it wasn't bad...just not on the level of the first one.

Re: 22 Jump Street (Lord & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Saw it. Laughed my ass off for the most part. I would rank it about the same as the first one, which I found funny as well, but not all over hilarious. The movies do grow on one with time IMO. Ice Cube pretty much made this movie with his short amount of screen time.

Question about the credits:
Spoiler:
Who was that playing the Kelly McGillis type character in the Top Gun parody? She looked familiar.

I liked it a lot but could have been shortened to make a much more leaner funny flick

It was nowhere near as good as the first one. Still an entertaining way to spend a matinee, but the laughs weren't as hard and not as many.

Couldn't help but feel bad for the writer's luck. Bad timing on the Tracy Morgan and Maya Angelou jokes.

It's almost creepy how much Wyatt Russell looks like his dad.

Re: 22 Jump Street (Lord & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

Enjoyed it a tad more than the first one. I agree a little fat could have been trimmed somewhere because it did drag in the beginning of the 3rd act, but it was overall a very good movie (and one of those rare successful comedy sequels).

I thought the actual ending was hilarious, but I'm curious as to how the original ending played out since it was a true "finale" to Schmidt and Jenko's run in the Jump Street program.

I would love to see Hill & Tatum team up again with Lord & Miller in another film down the road.

Just an additional scene with Rob Riggle and Dave Franco.

Riggle and Franco are spooning on the top bunk in their cell and Riggle says "I'm late.", while Franco just sort of whimpers. It was more gross than funny.

Re: 22 Jump Street (Lord & Miller, 2014) — The Reviews Thread

That was one hell of an entertaining movie. This movie had one of the biggest laughs i've seen in years
Spoiler:
Ice Cube turning the photo around and Tatum losing his mind. The slow roll of his freak out, remembering the celebration that Hill got laid. Great stuff.

I thought it was weird that they did the Rules of Attraction split shot twice. With that said, Lord & Miller should do the Deadpool movie, I think it would work with their style.

I mentioned this in another thread, but I'm really disappointed they passed on Ghostbusters 3. I think the flair they put on their movies is very unique and would have loved to have seen how that could've worked.

I'm not sure what their next movie is but I'm sure I'll be seeing it in theaters. It's a shame they'e not directing The Lego Movie 2.

Also, I don't want to be a celebrity and have a joke about me in a Jump Street movie.

Spoiler:
Tracy Morgan and Maya Angelou in this, and they had to change a Whitney Houston joke right before 21 came out.

I thought it was as much fun as the original...and I just watched the original for the first time this weekend (day before I saw the sequel). I thought it was a lot of fun and, as a movie fan, I loved the self-awareness about them being in a sequel.

It looked like a $50 million movie, tops. Or rather an expensive TV show. $100 million doesn't go as far as it used to, does it?
