Sicario (2015) D: Villeneuve S: Blunt, Del Toro
Sicario
Villeneuve is circling up to helm the Mexico/U.S. border crime tale "Sicario." Penned by Taylor Sheridan, the "No Country For Old Men"-esque tale will follow a female cop and two male delta-force rangers who cross from Tucson to Mexico to catch a drug lord, but once they cross the border, it's a whole other more dangerous and depraved world than they were expecting. Firstly, it sounds like more morally fascinating territory for Villeneuve to work with in the construct of a genre flick, and with a woman in the lead role (pretty rare for this kind of thing), we can only imagine that it may hold some great dramatic opportunities.
Deadline cautions Villeneuve is (unsurprisingly) getting a few projects tossed his way to consider, but apparently there is already distributor interest in this one. And certainly in a time when tentpoles rule, any little leg up for a movie helps.

In Mexico, SICARIO means hitman. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent [Emily Blunt] is enlisted by an elite government task force official [Josh Brolin] to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past [Benicio Del Toro], the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.

Looks like Villeneuve will be delivering the goods again. Good to see Benicio Del Toro getting a meatier role. For a second it looked like he was going to become a full time character actor.

Love Villeneuve but thought this was pretty meandering and am kinda surprised of all the positive notices. The opening 20 minutes are stellar - the cinematography is great and the score is awesome but it gets heavily bogged down in procedure and interdepartmental politics IMO. Del Toro steals the movie, Blunt is great but not used enough to really make it something special - also could have ditched at least 10 minutes of driving around/night vision footage without harming the movie at all. Good but not great, lots of wasted potential. Great beginning, boring middle, good finale. Temper expectations.

I'm actually off on October 2nd, I think I will see this. I have $10 accumulated on my AMC Stubs card.
Yeah I think the title might make this hard to attract a large audience. Even though the cast is good, I don't see this making a ton of money in the box office. I hope I'm wrong, but I think this will make no more than $25-30M tops, if that.

Villeneuve is fast becoming one of my favourite directors - I absolutely loved Incendies and Prisoners, and Enemy is now one of my favourite films. I really enjoyed his short film Next Floor too. I still need to check out Polytechnique though. Can't wait to see Sicario!

“This is a movie that needs word of mouth,” said Wachsberger. “It’s not an easy title. ‘Sicario’? You have to Google that. You’re not going to wear a t-shirt of that.”
Heck I'd wear that t-shirt! And this looks awesome.

why is the studio keep flip flopping on the release date of this - it's in limited release now, then TV spots stated Oct. 2nd, and now I see it's expanding this Friday (25th) - talk about confusing - got my tix for this Saturday night - can't wait to see this.

This week = Limited Expansion (likely a few hundred theaters)
Next week = Nationwide (2,000+ theaters)
Depends on what market you're in.

Saw it tonight. Very good, but not as much action as the trailer implies. Certainly more of a thriller than an action movie. The squad tactics and gunplay looked and sounded legit though, so credit to Villeneuve there. Benicio was great, as was Blunt. Music was also good, it really upped the intensity of certain scenes.
