Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros.?

As many of you are probably aware, there have been online reports stating that apparently the Majority of Gamers Today Can’t Finish Level 1 in Super Mario Bros.. Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros. on the original Nintendo Entertainment System?

EDIT: The original Super Mario Bros. is the first game I ever finished.

Yes. Countless times. On the NES, all by myself.
I've finished it on emulators, too, but more times on the NES itself.

Re: Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros.?

There is absolutely no way that is true. I could maybe believe it if it said the majority of today's gamers couldn't get past some of the later levels, but saying they can't even get past the first level is a load of bull.

Anyway, I have beaten Super Mario Bros.

Re: Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros.?

Yeah, that first level is incredibly easy. I don't believe it for a second.

I could believe it if they took a random bunch of people off the street, not "gamers". Of course we're also told such obvious horseshit like 50% of gamers are female.

These statistics probably include people who play Angry Birds and Plants vs Zombies on the iPad but never actually play any "real" games.

Calling them "gamers" is a huge stretch, but I bet they're included anyway.

That's a parody site like the Onion, so this isn't actually true.

I liked the article about Sega localizing Yakuza 5 into a Juggalos game, and the one about how not everybody is upset about Facebook acquiring Oculus because blind people don't care.

Re: Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros.?

Nope, but I never owned an NES, so I've only played chunks at friends houses when I was younger. It's been a good 20 years or so, but I bet I could.

Yes, as a child. And then later as an adult.

Thank you for the info.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if "classic" games are actually more difficult for newer gamers?

Considering that Plants vs Zombies on the iPad is an excellent game that lasts much longer than the eight hours that many "real" (I assume you mean triple A) games last, I'd say I don't like your attitude.

Re: Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros.?

Yes, a shit ton of times.

That said, it's interesting to watch someone try and play a Mario Bros game that never grew up playing them. My fiancee was playing New Super Mario Bros on DS and for whatever reason she just couldn't get a lot of the platforming and jumping down, even holding down a button to run and jump. For most of us it's probably second nature.

It's a tough one.

My best is getting through 27 levels without losing a life (3x through and died on Level 7). I doubt I could do that now, but I'm confident I could get through level 1

Re: Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros.?

We watched the replay videos of how the gamers performed and saw that many did not understand simple concepts like bottomless pits. Around 70 percent died to the first Goomba. Another 50 percent died twice. Many thought the coins were enemies and tried to avoid them. Also, most of them did not use the run button. There were many other depressing things we noted but I can not remember them at the moment.
That's the start I had.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like the focus group had their number of tries artificially limited to an insanely low number. Like two.

There wasn't a focus group at all. It's pure fiction. Someone earlier said it's a satire site like The Onion.

At least The Onion can be entertaining. Some gamers thought the coins were enemies? Oh please. Nobody has ever thought that.

Re: Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros.?

Yes. Not sure if I did so on the NES (probably), but I did it on SMB Deluxe for the Game Boy Color, which was a fucking great port that added a lot of challenges.

Re: Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros.?

Heck, I finished SMB: The Lost Levels, which is WAY harder than the regular SMB. But that was a while ago. If I tried it now, I'm sure I wouldn't do as well. I'm too old and too busy to keep playing to get good enough again.

Re: Have you finished the original Super Mario Bros.?

No. I never owned the original NES. My now wife had one and we used to play it occasionally when we were dating. The last time we played it I got to the final castle, but couldn't figure out the correct pattern for the maze. I suppose I could have looked it up, but I never did. Haven't touched the game since.
