Skiptrace -- (S: Jackie Chan, Johnny Knoxville, D: Renny Harlin)
Cliffhanger and Long Kiss Goodnight helmer Renny Harlin has been tapped to direct the Jackie Chan buddy action comedy Skiptrace following the departure of previously announced director Sam Fell (Paranorman).
Chan is set to star opposite Seann William Scott and X-Men: Days of Future Past‘s Fan Bingbing in the tale of a Hong Kong detective (Chan) who teams up with a mouthy American gambler (Scott) to save his niece and take down the city’s most notorious criminal. Dasym Entertainment and Beijing-based Talent International Film are co-financing and co-producing the vehicle, which was first scripted by Jay Longino from Chan’s original idea. The Sitter scribes Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka did a rewrite ahead of the project’s Cannes presentation last year, and since then Geoff Moore and David Posamentier (Grandma’s Intergalactic Bed & Breakfast, Food Fight) and BenDavid Grabinski (Machinima’s Enormous) have also contributed revisions.
Meanwhile, Harlin’s coming off January’s Kellan Lutz-starrer The Legend of Hercules and is set to begin production in August in various exotic locales in China. Skiptrace also notably has approval as a co-production by China’s State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT) – not a shocker given that it stars the country’s biggest living action icon as well as Chinese superstar Fan. Bloom is currently handling sales in Cannes. Harlin’s repped at UTA. Screen Daily was first to report the project update today.
Was this supposed to be the script for Rush Hour 4? You put Chris Tucker in there and you have it ready to go.

Definitely sounds like a slightly retooled Rush Hour sequel. I like Jackie Chan and Sean William Scott so I'll check it out anyway. I also like most of the Harlin movies I've seen.

Old Jackie Chan? Past his prime Harlin? It sure doesn't sound all that great at first but here's hoping they have some mileage left in them.

I'd pay to see Harlin do a remake of his LONG KISS GOODNIGHT with Jackie Chan in the Geena Davis role and Seann William Scott in the Samuel L. Jackson role and it was a comedy instead of a dead-serious spy thriller. (I love the original but don't mind seeing variations on it.) Unfortunately, this ain't it.

It's a weird trailer.
I'm surprised this isn't coming out in Asia until Christmas time. This was filmed well over a year ago. I have a feeling this will get a straight to video release in the States. Jackie is 62 now and isn't really a draw here anymore.

UPDATE!!! NEW TRAILER!!!!
Looks like Harlin is on the D train to directing TV episodes. This looks beyond lame.

Saban Films has taken U.S. distribution rights to the Renny Harlin-directed Skiptrace, starring Jackie Chan, Johnny Knoxville and Fan Bingbing. Plans are for a theatrical release in Q3 this year. Written by Jay Longino and Ben David Grabinski, Skiptrace follows a Hong Kong detective who’s been tracking a dangerous crime boss for over a decade. When his beautiful goddaughter gets into trouble with the crime syndicate, he must track down the only man who can help — a fast-talking American gambler who is also on the run from the mob.

Hopefully that's enough time to do a good job with the 3D conversion.
Yes, that's a joke.
No, I don't want to see this in 2D or 3D.

Yeah, with a different race and locations, this is basically Rush Hour 1. Besides, I'm pretty sure he shouted "Carter" in one of the scene.

I really can't see Saban giving this much of theatrical push beyond the bare minimum of screens to say it had a theatrical run before it goes to DVD and VOD. Do they even have much of strength in theatrical distribution? Despite it feeling like they clearly just ran down a checklist of "things you need in a Jackie Chan movie" movie from both his Hong Kong glory days and his Hollywood period, I suspect it won't be his worst film in the greater scheme of things. That title still befits more than a few of his mainland pictures. He's spent so many years making party-friendly crap there that this can't help but be a lazy cobbling together of scraps from his more successful eras before he sold out. Ten to one it does alright in China, where the expectation of quality (as opposed to the same old stuff they've seen before) tends to drop exponentially.
Also, too much Mandarin-accented English is just plain irritating. Gimme Cantonese-accented English -- or just plain Cantonese -- any day. Considering Chan's status nowadays in the city that gave him his career, I don't suppose we'll see too much of that in this show.

If the movie isn't titled "Rush Hour 4" it's going to bomb in the U.S.
I've noticed that every Jackie movie that he's made in the U.S. outside of Rush Hour has done disappointing to shitty box office. Even his recent Chinese films distributed in the U.S. have gone mostly straight to video.
Jackie's just not a draw anymore, especially now at 62. I agree, I don't think Saban will do squat to promote and market this for the U.S. It will get the bare minimum amount of screens and will probably be on DVD/VOD within a month of it's release.

To be fair, there is some cultural sensitive jokes in the trailer that most Americans won't get. One of which is the song that Johnny Knoxville sang in front of bunch Mongolian girls is a song Jackie Chan made popular in Chinese pop culture. Back in the early 1990's, that song was in every household, TV and radio. A damn popular song, thus the scene is funny.
