Godzilla Fired Up at Box Office: 5/16-5/18

Early Estimates Per Deadline:

Godzilla is beating all expectations tonight with a $36M Friday to push its expected 3-day cume to a monstrous $90M+. The Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures’ pic is just demolishing the box office right now, thanks to a killer marketing campaign that teased audiences exactly to the right degree. Amazing that the monster is still popular a full 60 years after its introduction, and it’s come a long way from a man walking around in a rubber suit. The CGI eye candy, which cost $195M (although those with a vested interest say $160M) is playing well on IMAX screens is also opening around the world at the same time to huge numbers, which I reported earlier today.
1). Godzilla (WB), 3,952 theaters / $36M Fri. / 3-day cume: $90M+ (includes $9.3M Thursday) / Per screen average: $23K / Wk 1

2). Neighbors (UNI), 3,311 theaters (+32) / $8.8M to $9.0M Fri. / 3-day cume: $27M (-45%) / Total cume: $92.5M to $94M / Wk 2

3). The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (SONY) 3,991 theaters (-333) / $4.6M to $4.8M Fri. / 3-day cume: $16.5M (-54%) / Total cume: $172M+ / Wk 3

4). Million Dollar Arm (DIS), 2,109 theaters / $3.5M Fri. / 3-day cume: $10.5M / Wk 1

5). The Other Woman (FOX), 3,054 theaters (-252) / $2M Fri. / 3-day cume: $6.5M (-32%) / Total cume: $71.7M / Wk 4

6). Heaven Is For Real (SONY), 2,893 theaters (-155) / $1.3M Fri. / 3-day cume: 4.5M (-39%) / Total cume: $82.3M / Wk 5

7). Rio 2 (FOX), 2,371 theaters (-602) / $925K Fri. / 3-day cume: $4M (-16%) / Total cume: $118.2M / Wk 6

8). Captain America: The Winter Soldier (DIS), 2,271 theaters (-430) / $1.1M Fri. / 3-day cume: $4M (-29%) / Total cume: $251M / Wk 7

9). Moms’ Night Out (SONY), 1,046 theaters (+2) / $672K Fri. / 3-day cume: $2.2M (-48%) / Total cume: $7.6M / Wk 2

10). Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return (FREE), 2,578 theaters (-80) / $470K Fri. / 3-day cume: $1.9M (-48%) / Total cume: $6.5M / Wk 2

$90+ million?! Fuck me that's fantastic. Guess the marketing did a good job of wiping away the memory of the Emmerich abortion.

I would think for the vast majority of people Godzilla is black and white and Toho. The roland movie was not even a blip on the history of Godzilla.

I think the inclusion of Cranston gives this type of movie a ton of credibility that it wouldn't have had otherwise. Good for Godzirra!

Good for Godzilla. Another article I read said it would be doing good at $70M. $20M over that is awesome.

It made $380 million back in 1998. Most of that overseas, but a lot of people still saw it due to the name. I bet some people will still prefer it to the current one...but won't say it out in public.

The real test is how well it does in Japan.

Has it opened there yet?

Well they know this film exists unlike Pacific Rim which didn't get close to anything of marketing over there, thanks to WB. I'm assuming Toho is going to distribute this over there?

Question: how does our stuff fare over there? Box office specifically.

I'll say it. I was extremely disappointed in this new film.

Seriously should have brought back Mathew Broderick.

Re: Godzilla Fired Up at Box Office: 5/16-5/18

My boss is a big Godzilla fan and tried to rewatch the 98 Godzilla again a few weeks ago. His response was pretty funny, in that "I don't know how f'ed up I was to enjoy that piece of shit back then" sense.

Re: Godzilla Fired Up at Box Office: 5/16-5/18

The premiere of the '98 Godzilla is one of the most disappointing movie experiences of my life. An odd air of malaise hung over the entire theater that day.
