Footsteps (2006) - (dir: Gareth Evans) (S: Nicholas Bool, Mads Koudal)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0770753/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Synopsis:
I just watched this last night. I bought the DVD because I liked The Raid, The Raid 2, and to a lesser extent, Merantau.
Skip it unless you really really want to see how Evans started his film career.
There's a few good moments and shots (a hint of what was to come later in Evans' career), and Mads Koudal plays a decent psychopath (he was better in Merantau), but really... it felt LONG at just 77 minutes.
Also, the DVD is 1.85:1 letterbox. No 16x9 enhancement here.

I'm fine. I'll stick with every The Raid onward. Merantau just doesn't interest me. One day I'll see it though. Just not soon.

Yeah, plus $16,900 isn't a particularly high budget.

^I was going to add that it's a no-budget flick. That doesn't automatically make it bad (see: Primer, which was amazing). It's... everything else.

Neither is $7,000 bucks but Rodriguez did fine. So was it even well made or scripted? Or just a combo of meh?

Meh all around, except for a few shots and such. As mentioned, Mads Koudal delivers the best performance, as flawed as it is (mostly because of dialogue). He's a great smooth-talking creep. As I said, it's worth checking out if you absolutely want to see how Evans started out, or if you want to see a no-budget sort-of-but-not-really-horror-flick, but honestly... it's not worth the time or effort.
Merantau is worth it, IMO.
