Typical to shave off a slice of case and rewrap?

Just bought The Thirteenth Floor BD from Amazon, it arrived today. Haven't unwrapped it yet because there's a question I'd like to ask first: Is it typical to shave off a slice of the corner of the BD case then rewrap it, if it's a cutout? I'm only ever used to having a slice through the barcode, but since this may be something new I thought I'd ask first. I just find it odd that Amazon would send me a BD (Condition: New) that had a piece of the case shaved off like that, then rewrapped it.

Edit: Just discovered it was Fulfilled by Amazon prompting me to look at the online order. Sure enough, it was sold by Primetime Deals, fulfilled by Amazon, sold as New.

Half afraid to open it up but I guess that's the only way I'm going to find out if the disc is spotless. Still, it bugs me that (whoever sold it as New) would shave off a slice of the corner of the case like that, then rewrap it.

It's hard to say, even the official distributors have gotten relatively shady when it comes to re-wrapping Blu-rays. Many of the third-party sellers on Amazon re-wrap items and pass them off as new, though I found it more a problem with DVD than BD.

I wouldn't worry too much, that particular BD doesn't come with any code they could have stolen from the inside.

Back when cut-outs were first done to vinyl LPs, you would see all kinds of things done to them... corners snipped off, notches cut into the sides, and holes drilled through a corner. Same with cassette tapes and CDs; notches would be cut through the case or holes drilled through the corner. Don't think I ever saw a CD or cassette with a corner cut off, though, since the hard plastic would probably shatter.

Nowadays, you mostly see the UPC code defaced or altered so they can't be scanned and returned as new. Most people working at retail probably wouldn't even notice a small hole drilled into a case or notch cut into a spine.

Re: Typical to shave off a slice of case and rewrap?

Well, I've unwrapped it, guess that means I plan to keep it although I'm not happy about the condition of the case. The disc appears to be in good shape (except for a tiny speck I thought was dust but it won't blow off), no scratches, scuffs or fingerprints. Other than that, and the wrinkled sleeve (seeing more of that lately ~ my The Invaders (both seasons) was like that too) the BD seems to be OK. Still pisses me off this was sold as New when it was obviously rewrapped (after physically defacing the case).
