This is one of the more bizzare releases in recent years. a movie that actually got Berry a Golden Globe nomination in 2011, is just now being released, and to 125 theaters in the US by 'CodeBlack Films' a division of LionsGate

Weird. So was there a limited release to make the movie eligible for award nominations? Or how does that work?

One theater in LA for a week to have it qualify, per the linked article Freestyle was supposed to release it in Feb of 2011, but never did,& its been sitting on the shelf all these years

Doh, so it does. Trailer looks very interesting, I'm guessing Lionsgate will eventually release this on DVD and Blu.
