The Grudge -- reboot (2020, D: Nicolas Pesce) S: Bichir, Riseborough

A reboot to a remake...

EXCLUSIVE: The Grudge, the Takashi Shimazu-directed 2004 film that helped establish the viability of low-cost genre films, is getting a reboot. Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe will relaunch the franchise, and they’ve set Midnight Meat Train scribe Jeff Buhler to draft the reboot.

The original starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, cost around $10 million, grossed $187 million worldwide and hatched a sequel. It was based on the Japanese horror thriller Ju-On by Shimizu. The new one will be produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Taka Ichise, with Roy Lee, Doug Davison, Joe Drake and Nathan Kahane exec producing. Gellar played a nurse in Tokyo who was afflicted by a curse that created uncontrollable rage and was pretty much fatal.

Buhler, who is separately working on a new version of Jacob’s Ladder, is repped by WME and The Gotham Group.

Yeah, since there aren't enough Ju-on movies in the world.

I was going to make a similar joke. Has there been a Ju-on / Ringu crossover yet?

So now they are mining the 2000's for remake material?

I know true horror film fans were hoping to see the resurgence of crappy PG-13 Japanese remakes. The endless output we got in the early 2000s wasn't nearly enough!

I think the mods need to talk to dan30oly regarding multiple accounts.

I've seen both theatrical movies and the made for video sequel.

I wonder if they plan to keep the Japanese theme of the previous films. I thought that was the most fascinating part of this series.

MMT is awesome, so here's hoping that this re-boot (never seen the original or its sequels) has lots of Lovecraftian imagery.

Yep! After all the r-rated found footage movies of the late 2000s were so much better.

Seems like an odd choice for a reboot. I don't think the original remake was that popular that people are clamoring for a reboot to it or anything and the films weren't all that special.

So, who in 2014 is the Sarah Michelle Gellar equivalent?

Amber Heard? Blake Lively?

All iterations of Ju-on/The Grudge have sucked.

Yea I feel like The Grudge didn't come out that long ago, but I guess nor did Spider-Man and that's been rebooted.

Lively hasn't really done anything since Gossip Girl ended.

Heard, maybe. Her "it" factor grew when she got involved with Johnny Depp.

I could see these people being possibilities:

Emily VanCamp (Revenge)
Emma Stone
Shailene Woodley

I'd love to see someone like Troian Bellisario be considered

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0069079/

She's one of the leads of Pretty Little Liars on ABC Family, which is one of the most popular young adult shows on TV right now.

Emma and Shailene are trying to be seen as somewhat serious actors now, I doubt they would do a remake to a remake.

That's not really that hard for a horror film to do though. They're one of the cheaper kinds of films to make. All it takes is a decent marketing campaign and releasing it at the right time of year and they make money easily. It was a flash in the pan type film and I really doubt there's that many people going I wish there was another sequel to The Grudge.

So that's why we're getting more. It's like you answered your own question, but then act confused by the obviousness of it.
