So far, this "celebration" has me completely underwhelmed.

Exactly. Just a bunch of titles that have been on sale for $10 (or less) many, many times. If they want to impress me, they can add titles to this sale that have never been part of a 10 for $10 sale yet (such as The Spirit).

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

Now if they included some of the TV series in this sale I would be celebrating.

Holding out hope that the last week of the sale sees their more recent crop go up for grabs. I'd bite on this sale for Disorderlies, Gummo, Zero Effect, Thirteen Women, and .... ah, some fifth film blind buy.

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

Yeah, Warner needs to come up with something better for their "celebration." I did almost bite on the 5 for 50 last week, but after an hour of sorting through the sale titles and putting together an order, discovered at checkout that their usual free shipping discount for $35 of archive titles is not in effect right now. So with tax, that boosted the per title cost up to about $12 per title, which is kind of weak.

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

2 questions:

1. Has anyone figured out how to search for just the blu-rays that are part of the sale?

2. Are the blu's pressed or burned?

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

I answered Q #1: Browse in list view & search for both "BD" & "Blu-ray". There are a total of 5 titles. BFD..............

Hudsucker Proxy, which doesn't appear in the sale item search, is also part of the sale.

FWIW, free shipping over $35 appears to be in effect at this moment.

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

Thanks for this thread. I hadn't bought anything from them in a while. The prices were too steep, so I went for a five-for $50 deal. I made up a list of 13 possibles and weeded it down to these five:

THE IRON MISTRESS
THE ANIMAL WORLD
THE SLAVE
FBI CODE 98
THE PHANTOM OF HOLLYWOOD

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

The only way I've purchased WA titles has been through such sales. The following may be my picks, this time (passed on first three weeks):

THE BEAST BEAST WITH FIVE FINGERS
THE MASK OF DMITIRIOS
BORIS KARLOFF TRIPLE FEATURE
LOOPHOLE
THE VERDICT

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

I usually get emails from them on Mondays saying that their sales have "one more day" so it will probably end around then.

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

I'm not very sure of this, but it seems as if each "week" of sales in this event has started around Wednesday and ended around Monday or Tuesday. So my (likely worthless) guess is that the sale will end with the last day of the month, monday.

Thanks for mentioning the Karloff; I'd like to get that one. I actually have 2 of the 3 films, but they're pd collector's prints, so I assume this is a major upgrade.

Going to wait for some sort of sale where I don't have to spend $50 to get it, though. Paying big $'s for burned discs rubs me the wrong way.

I also have the 2 Lorre's, they're both good.

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

I'm quite eager to see new (to me) Lorre (and Greenstreet) stuff!

Re: the Karloff Triple Feature, DVD Beaver has screen grabs of the Warner Archive transfers (without comparison to any other editions):

BTW, you have a ROKU (and other devices?), you can watch the Warner Archive's streaming service free for two weeks. Not all titles are on it, but many are.

Re: Warner Archive 5th Birthday Sale

Wasn't able to get free shipping, but was able to get all 6 blu rays. Apparently you don't have to order in multiples of 5, just 5 or more.

The WB site indicates on each of the blu rays: Initial quantities of this release will be traditionally replicated (pressed) in anticipation of high consumer demand. Film Aficionado shows release dates from 11/20/12 to 10/29/13 for these 6 blu rays.

Thanks for the links to the caps! I'll have to compare. From memory my West Of Shanghai is also pretty good. I HOPE my Invisible Menace isn't any worse than that; for WAC that's a pretty bad print. I don't have Devil's Island at all. I also need to pick up TCM's Karloff: Criminal Kind if the price ever gets reasonable.

My holy grail is a high quality Colonel March set. I have the same San Francisco UHF broadcast set that most other BK collector's have (& at least I got an early version so it's on 7 discs with a decent bit rate; I've seen 1 person cram the 30+ episodes onto 2 discs & sell it!), but the quality is pretty bad. I wonder if the original tapes/films still exist as March was a 50's UK TV series.
