Questions for those who get Blu-rays through Netflix.

So I rented a couple of movies at Redbox because they were ones that had all the extras and movies in one disc and figured I could rent those and just buy the multi-discs.

I was surprised to find that the extras on the disc had been disabled.

I know Netflix doesn't carry bonus discs when movies come in multiple-disc packages but in those instances where it's only one disc (i.e. Gravity) are those available or disabled on the disc?

Thanks!

I've found it depends on the movie really. Most are disabled though. Especially bigger releases.

Redbox and Netflix both carry a lot of movie only titles, where there are no special features at all. This started a while back. I guess they feel that the average movie renter isn't overly concerned with bonus materials.

I think it's more that they want you to buy the release instead of rent it if you want to watch the special features.

As much as I'd rather have all the special featured on my rental disc I've learned to accept the rental copies. Mostly because if I like the movie I'm going to end up buying it and if I don't like the movie I wouldn't watch the special features anyway.

Still sucks though.

This has been going on for years now. It's a big silly if you ask me.

This. Redbox is also pretty notorious for not carrying director's cuts or unrated versions, because it's seen as an extra or supplement. Netflix still does.

Redbox does the same damn thing, it irritates the hell out of me. The whole reason I signed up for Netflix was because of the fact that I could get so many things, including bonus material. Now they're dropping that?!

Redbox and Netflix aren't the ones to blame. Several movie studios decided a few years ago that this was a way to encourage people to buy rather than rent. They manufacture separate rental-only discs, and that's what they supply to rental outlets.

Well, that sucks. It had been years since I rented. Now I know why.

Universal movies have that disclaimer when you try to access the bonus features

"if you want the full movie experience please buy the DVD" or something like that.

Sometimes you get the bonus features but most of the time you don't.

I don't think 20th Century FOX rentals ever have bonus features.

How does Netflix handle the (old) Doctor Who series, if they even carry them at all?

Most of those releases have extensive bonus features and bonus discs. They seem niche enough that BBC or whoever releases the DVDs wouldn't bother with separate pressings for Netflix.

I've never been a Netflix subscriber, but I might be interested in joining to be able to re-watch the old Doctor Who stories cheaply since BBCA has no interest in running them outside of that Doctors Revisited thing they did for the 50th Anniversary.

Those discs would have the extra features, and would be the exact same discs being sold at retail.

It's only new release, major studio titles being pressed as "Rental Only" copies.

Re: Questions for those who get Blu-rays through Netflix.

They have 13 seasons of the classic Dr. Who on Amazon Prime. May be worth the 80 bucks to get through them. Not all seasons have an ep, may be worth a browse.

You could access the Dallas Buyers Club special features even though it is a Universal release though wish it was longer than 7 minutes and more info about the real Rob Woodruff.

Re: Questions for those who get Blu-rays through Netflix.

The studios force this practice on the rental services, which do get a price break over buying retail copies and assure themselves of enough copies.
