True Detective -- "After You've Gone" -- 3/02/14

Hart (Woody Harrelson) and Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) forge a truce to probe a murky string of disappearances that tie to the symbology of the Dora Lange murder and the Tuttle family.

Written by Nic Pizzolatto; directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga.

Episode 7 of 8

Next week is the season finale. Still no news yet about a renewal for a "2nd season" I'm sure it's a matter of working out the logistics and there probably is no hurry since it wouldn't air until 2015 anyways.

I'm counting the minutes. I would do something else, but I wouldn't be able to focus anyway.

^ no joke. Damn, these CID guys have a rough job. Seeing the worst in humanity day in and out.

Anyway, important episode tonight. Advanced the story as it needed to in order to set the stage for the season finale. No real shocker that the PD looks to have had some involvement.

I feel if there were more than the 8 episodes, they'd be able to spend more time on what happened over the last several years. Would have liked to have seen Cohle's home invasions, Tuttle's death and a few other things expanded on.

Creepy scene when the stick drawings on Cohle's journal triggered the reaction from the old woman.

looks like our theories about Hart's family don't seem to be true.

so, the scar face guy. was he the same guy that was mowing the lawns at the closed down school that they visited years ago? seems like it was the same guy, but he didn't have the scars when they first talked to him.

I thought he was the same too. Might have to look again and see if it is and if he had the scars.

It would be odd that they wouldn't have remembered the scars on him.

He had a bit of a beard when they saw him the first time at the school. It's the same guy.

Yeah, it was a great ep. After watching the preview, I thought it would have been one of his daughters on the video due to the preview showing him blow up. To tell you the truth, that scene had my eyes water up with fury. The way the little girl was crying, well edited and disturbing.

Yeah, kind of hard to believe that Rust would have overlooked those scars the first time he talked to that guy.

I still think he would have noticed since hair doesn't normally grow on scar tissue.

Re: True Detective -- "After You've Gone" -- 3/02/14

Great episode for sure, really going to miss this show when the season is over. Rust and Marty have grown on me and are damn interesting characters. I'd love to see more of these characters but way the show is set up as a one and done with these two has worked out well.

The videos and pictures that Rust showed Marty were very disturbing. Would have liked to have seen a bit more showing what Rust was doing during his absence and showing him going around gathering more information and breaking into Tuttle's homes as was mentioned. Also I agree that it would have been nice to see Tuttle's death and what led up to it expanded on more. The theories with Marty's daughter being a victim are wrong it seems but the ones about the case being covered up by higher ups in the department was right. Should be interesting to see how things wrap up next weekend.

Honestly it almost feels like they could have squeezed a couple more episodes into the season if you ask me but overall the show's been really satisfying and I think the finale will be too.

I keep remembering the scene where the oldest daughter was reanacting some "ritual" scene to her little sister with her barbie dolls (forget which episode it was). Everything in this show so far has purpose. This has to pay off too because it won't make sense to me.

that's more because they have to say season finale, since it is coming back next year. it would just confuse people without saying that.

Great episode. But yeah, it seems this show would have benefited from a 12 episode season or something around that. 8 episodes was too low.

I think there is more to come on this:

Spoiler:
While the camera pans across the photos on the Maggie's mantle, there is one photo of Audrey standing by one of her paintings. That painting seems to depict a figure with a yellow crown and black stars. Audrey's Painting

As for the ritual re-enactment, weren't the kids talking about parents getting into an accident? Didn't Dora's father get into an accident?

There's too much evidence pointing to the kids being aware of this "cult" for it to be just coincidence.

I'm a bit unclear on how Marty knew the sheriff was lying about the missing girl case.

I'm already mourning the end of this series, but I'm looking forward to a binge re-watch. This week-to-week schedule is killing me....

^ I took it to mean he was lying because the sheriff said he didn't personally speak to the victim's family, but someone else did. I think records show the sheriff had that conversation. I don't recall all the details, still need to re-watch the episode.

I also agree there might be some loose ends to tie up with Hart's family. The scattershot clues peppered in throughout the season can't be coincidence.

Re: True Detective -- "After You've Gone" -- 3/02/14

Just wrapped up the seventh episode and I called it:
Spoiler:
The groundskeeper is involved big time. In fact, the way the light hit his face from the side you could see that his face had scarring.

I'll double check but that's what I remember and I just finished the episode 5 minutes ago.

Damn, just one more episode left to go!

Major props to the creative team for closing this episode out with Townes Van Zandt. He was arguably one of the most underrated songwriters out there.

Townes Van Zandt is awesome. Pancho and Lefty is one of the most haunting songs ever written.
