Criterion flash sale

From now until noon tomorrow, February 26, Criterion is having a half-off sale on their site (www.criterion.com) with the code "MADFOX." Note that the 50% off is taken off the MSRP, but the code is good for everything that's in-stock and you get free shipping with orders over $50. If you're interested, I'd take advantage of it as soon as you can. The site is slower than death during these promos and they tend to sell out of stuff pretty quickly. Good luck.

Re: Criterion flash sale

I guess the sale is going well! Their site is really buckling under the strain.

Re: Criterion flash sale

Guess I got in under the wire? It gave me the discount for It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World but said it wouldn't ship until 3/19, and I had to pay for shipping. Hopefully it'll work that way for anyone else who hasn't dove in yet.

Hell of a haul for one of these sales... I would usually wait until the B&N sale to get that much.

I don't ever really spend more than the $100 range on the flash sales.

Took me a few tries, but I picked up:

Thief
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Fantastic Mr. Fox
King of the Hill
Tess

Nice to know the problem wasn't at my end - I paused all my Criterion downloads from TPB and that still didn't clear things up! --Peter

Re: Criterion flash sale

Yeah, it's a pain. I was stocking up my cart and when I went back in to add another title everything that was there was gone. I wonder if they're pulling items from people that have not actually ordered yet to fill active orders? It's a pain in the ass cuz now I have to start all over.

Re: Criterion flash sale

Yea... I don't get it. They go through this with every flash sale. Shouldn't they have bulked up the server for the next 24 hours?

Re: Criterion flash sale

Fantastic Mr. Fox went out of stock while I was checking out so I missed out. You'd think they would have enough stock to last more than a couple of hours...especially on a title that would be as popular as this one.

We’re doing something special this flash sale…

Twenty lucky customers who shop during this flash sale will find golden tickets tucked into their orders. Those winners will get goodies ranging from Criterion shirts and other swag up to the grand prize: a virtual shopping spree via webcam to the Criterion product closet in our New York City office. Good luck!

This is what I do as well...5 movies, $97 and some change. I'm 2 points away from my $50 gift card, so I'm tempted to order one more, but I'll wait until the next sale.

Re: Criterion flash sale

Dazed and Confused
House
Quadrophenia
Rashomon
Rosemary's Baby
Seven Samurai

It was hard limiting it to just that, but I'm finally getting a start on upgrading my Criterion Kurosawa LDs to Blus. Now I only need Stray Dog, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Bad Sleep Well, The Hidden Fortress, Throne of Blood, High and Low, Red Beard, Dodesukaden, and Derzu Usala. No problem. (And yes, I know that not all of those are out on Criterion Blu yet)

Re: Criterion flash sale

Seeing Throne of Blood backordered kind of took the wind out of my sails for this sale.

I couldn't find anything I was interested enough in to qualify for free shipping and make the sale worth it.

Re: Criterion flash sale

Would have definitely jumped on Throne of Blood. Passed on Mad World because even with the discount the price for that alone is nothing special, especially without the free shipping.

Re: Criterion flash sale

Riddle me this:

Criterion was one of the first companies to include subtitles on classic Hollywood films (back in the early days of DVD releases). I love have the subtitle option. However, on all mixed-language Criterion releases, English is (almost) never subtitled...even when such subtitles existed in previous formats. Wings of Desire is one of my favorite films, but it's difficult switching gears between reading subtitles and listening to spoken English - more confusing when lots has to do with inner dialogue being voiced. Then there's Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence where the English is so heavily accented it was very difficult for me to make out what's being said.

I sent them an e-mail asking about this, but essentially got a canned response. Maybe I'm the only one who's bugged by this...

Sweet, I've been meaning to pick up some of their silents, so I ordered City Lights, The Gold Rush and Safety Last for under twenty bucks each.
