I recently purchased the Panasonic DVD-LV75 and I wanted to get some headphones for it. I don't want to purchase an ampliphier for the speakers and I also don't want to spend over $100. The DVD player supports simulated surround, so I would like something that would take advantage of that. Thanks.

I got a pair of grado sr-80s for around $95 and I couldn't be happier! I dont know how well they would support stim. sur. sound but if a local hifi store sells them, I suggest you give them a listen. If you are interested, do a search on Grado and you'll find more of my responses among others.
I know that www.hifi.com carries them and I'm pretty sure the other place is called www.headphone.com

Can I use the SR-80s without an amplifier? I read somewhere that the sound quality greatly suffers on them if played through a non-amplified source. Will these put a big drain on the battery life of the DVD player? Will they drain the battery more than the Grado SR-60s?

I have a Pioneer portable DVD player and I use these AIWA HP-CN5 headphones on Airplanes. Noise cancelling with 70% noise reduction. Ran me about $65.

I also own the Pioneer portable (great machine) and went on a search for just the "right" headphones. Tried all the noise-canellors (including Awia's)and wasn't satifisfied with any of them (comfort, sound-quality, etc.). I finally ended up with a pair of Sony MDR-V6 headphones and I couldn't be happier. They sound great, block out noise, and fold up nice and small. The only problem is that they no longer make them, HOWEVER, you might be able to find a pair because there are some still floating around. (I found lots of them at my local Fry's.) (And yes, I tried the new Sony's that replaced them (don't recall the name and model number, but they can be found everywhere--including Best Buy), and the old model is actually better. Good luck.

Low RG - I'll have to include that in my research list. Where did you but them from?
Franchot - I was at BestBuy today and saw the Sony MVR-V600 (not sure if that was the model number). Didn't see any price on it though. I'll definitely look up the model you mentioned.
Thanks for the response guys!

I have the Sony MDR-NC5 .. they are the cheapest of Sony's Noise Cancelling Headphones. This is my second pair, I left my first on a flight .. but I love it! Its the best $99 I ever spent. Not only does it cancel noise, but the sound envelopes you giving you a theater like feeling. Its awesome!
