The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014, D: Francis Lawrence)

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is an upcoming 2014 science fiction adventure film directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Danny Strong. It is the first of two cinematic parts based on the novel Mockingjay, the final book in The Hunger Games trilogy, written by Suzanne Collins, and the third installment in The Hunger Games film series. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. It is the sequel to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and will be followed by the concluding entry, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

Katniss Everdeen reluctantly leads the districts of Panem in a rebellion against the tyrannical and corrupt Capitol. As the war that will determine the fate of Panem escalates to the point of destruction of the other districts by the Capitol, Katniss must decide for herself whom she can trust and what needs to be done, while all she holds dear hangs in the balance.
Release date: November 21, 2014

Part II will be released November 20, 2015

The big cast additions so far have been Julianne Moore, Lily Rabe and Natalie Dormer, who shaved half her head:

Re: The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 (2014, Lawrence)

I'm already sick of this trend of turning the last book in a series into two films. I think that it mostly worked for Harry Potter, but Mockingjay is already a thin tome, and very little happens in the first half. So either they're going to stretch it to intolerable lengths, or they're going to add in a bunch of material that never existed in the book. Neither option gives me much hope.

Amen. This book is the shortest one I believe. I think they're just adding in more battles or something.

Also isn't the last book considered the darkest/most violent of the three? Curious if they have ratings issues

They're all very close in length. 387, 391, 390 pages respectively.

I think Mocking Jay could be split into two movies by adding prolonged battle scenes. The advantage it has over Catching Fire is that it feels less like a retread. The disadvantage is, of course, that it's by far the bleakest and therefor the least enjoyable of the trilogy. Getting people to come bak for the fourth movie? That might be hard.

I'm assuming the third movie will end with
Spoiler:
Peeta's rescue. That's about half-way through, right?

Agreed. It screams "money grab" so loud I can barely hear the rest of the movie!

I think the bullshit they pulled with The Hobbit has been more than enough to make me sick of stretching one book into multiple movies.

The battles in Mockingjay suck. I have no desire to see them stretched to interminable lengths or multiplied for no good reason. This is a cash grab, pure and simple.

Perhaps, but that's the new reality of cash-cow franchises. Milk them just a little longer. Goes back to Sopranos. BTW : This movie studio - Lion's Gate also releases Mad Men on disc and guess what they're going to do with their final 14 episodes?

This practice annoys me just as much on television.

Yeah, they suck in the book. But if they're rewritten and directed by someone who knows how to do battle scenes right, they might be considerably better perhaps?

Effie doesn't appear in the third book, does she? I assume they'll add her to the last two movies somehow. Banks is too popular and great in the roll to leave out entirely.

I would be willing to bet
Spoiler:
Peeta's rescue is an elaborate action sequence . It's mentioned in passing in the book. I also think the last thing we will see is Peeta trying to strangle Katniss.
That would give them quite a cliffhanger.

Not really. Deathly Hallows Part 1 was a bore in which very little actually happened whereas Part 2 tried to cram way too much into one movie and somehow ended up feeling rushed despite its runtime.

I didn't know they were splitting this in two. Lame.

I think the first movie was surprisingly solid, and the second was brisk but not too quick. Could they have done it in one? Sure, but that's the only book that I feel made for a good two-movie split.

I disliked both for the aforementioned reasons. They really soured me on the series. Then again, my favorite in the franchise was Prisoner of Azkaban and book fans assure me it's the worst of all the movies.

Recasting Plutarch Heavensbee for Hunger Games sequels

In the wake of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's tragic and untimely death, the producers of the Hunger Games sequels will have to do a lot of re-writing to drop Plutarch Heavensbee from the continuing story, or will have to recast the character.

When they had to recast Albus Dumbledore for the Hatty Potter films, they at least had the elaborate make-up and costuming to help obscure the change of actors a little bit.

If they decide to recast Hoffman's role, who would you speculate they choose?

Don't think they'll recast.

You use as much of footage that you have for him, and just rewrite the rest.

Re: Recasting Plutarch Heavensbee for Hunger Games sequels

Didn't know how much, if any, work he had already done on the final two films.

from article:
In terms of Hoffman's role in the final two Hunger Games films, here's what we know. Hoffman had finished working on Mockingjay, Part 1, and had seven days of filming left on Part 2.

They should have Jim Gaffigan shoot the remaining scenes.

All the government officials in these movies are interchangeable. Just distribute his lines.

It is my understanding that this character has important things to do in Mockingjay, and it has to be that character doing them.
