They Came Together (2014, Wain) S: Rudd, Poehler
With just two weeks before its big premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, David Wain is unveiling the first look at his new film, They Came Together, exclusively on BuzzFeed. The movie has all the staples of Wain’s most beloved works, like Wet Hot American Summer, Children’s Hospital, and The State: romance, New York City, bookstores, and Yiddish!
They Came Together, which is the big closing-night selection at Sundance later this month, reunites Wain’s A-team crew of collaborators, with newly minted Golden Globe winner Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd leading the way. As the clip above shows, the two play an unlikely pair who start off on the wrong foot, but connect at a bookstore.
Fellow Wet Hot alumni Michael Ian Black, Christopher Meloni, and Ken Marino also return for They Came Together, while Max Greenfield, Cobie Smulders, Ed Helms, Melanie Lynsky, Michael Shannon, Jason Mantzoukas, and Michaela Watkins join this time around too.
Wain offered this directors’ statement ahead of the premiere of They Came Together:
After having already made world-changing cinematic statements on adolescence (Wet Hot American Summer), religion (The Ten), service (Role Models), and community (Wanderlust), I teamed up with Michael Showalter to take on a topic that (to our knowledge) has yet been seen in the movies: ROMANCE — particularly heterosexual romance between two white people.
Our next idea was to mix this romance story with humor - so you could almost call this a Romantic-Comedy, so to speak.
We first worked with Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd on Wet Hot American Summer. They played summer camp counselors in that movie, so it was obviously hard for us to imagine them playing a shopkeeper and a corporate executive, respectively. But thanks to a team of acting coaches and an award™ winning VFX team, we pulled off the illusion.

Didn't really care for this at all. A shame...

It's an intentionally terrible movie - I think they said "the worst rom com possible", I still found it pretty funny. It's tailor made for animated gif files.

It's not a rom-com... it's a spoof on rom-com cliches.
There were some funny scenes, but then there were other scenes with a lot of potential but weren't executed well. Basically, the movie tried too hard. It was miles better than any of those retarded spoof movies from the "Date Movie" guys - but that's not saying much though.
