I may actually give this a chance. The theatrical cut wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...I was intrigued yet underwhelmed. Hopefully this extended cut makes up for it.

Ridley Scott is usually pretty good about releasing worthwhile director's cuts of his films so I'll give it a shot.

Though, I wonder if the wording of "extended cut" rather than "director's cut" is cause for concern or simple semantics.

the released version is pretty graphic in terms of violence.

I was one of the ones who liked the movie, some stuff did feel missing though.

It has to be for marketing. I'm sure Ridley has enough pull (even with a film that failed at the BO) that they wouldn't release an alternate cut without his say so.

"Director's cut" is a closer adherence to the vision of an auteur.

"Unrated extended" means more blood and titties.

Update: Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment has acknowledged an error in the official press announcement that was dispatched earlier today. Below are revised running times for the Unrated Extended Cut and Theatrical Version of The Counselor.

• Unrated Extended Cut Blu-ray Run Time: 138 minutes
• Theatrical Blu-ray Run Time: 117 minutes
• Total Run Time: 215 minutes

Scott's director's cuts tend to be better than their theatrical editions, but I'd be very curious to know if an extra 21 minutes of more footage would actually improve this movie (which was generally reviewed negatively).

per the back of the box, the "unrated extended cut" has its own separate disc and contains "Truth of the Situation: Making the Counselor. an immersive experience with Feature Length commentary by director Ridley Scott"

so this long version may indeed be a 'directors cut' and will contain an audio commentary.

Redbox will probably only get the theatrical cut. I'll probably just get the unrated cut at the library or something somewhere down the line. I'm kind of curious about this in spite of all of the bad press.

I meant to see this in the theater so I think I'll give it a blind buy. I'm hoping this is one of those cases where I like a movie much better than the critics did.
